00:00what's happening guys this was another
00:02video that was highly requested by my
00:04we are going to be ranking the most
00:06common liberal arts degrees from the
00:09s tier to the worst which would be f
00:11tier liberal arts degrees are some of
00:13with some of the highest unemployment
00:15rates and those that are employed a lot
00:17of the time end up working completely
00:19low paying jobs in order to try to pay
00:21off their mountain of student loan debt
00:23and they get mad at the world and
00:25purposely misspell everybody's names in
00:26order to ironically show how much they
00:28learn from their expensive education
00:30now all joking aside i know they do that
00:32on purpose it's just a marketing thing
00:34some of these degrees from a personal
00:35finance perspective are going to be
00:37others it's never that simple that these
00:39types of degrees are bad and these types
00:41of degrees are good so in this video i'm
00:43going to be going over
00:44which ones are good and which ones are
00:45not so good and then which ones are just
00:48before we jump into it gently tap the
00:49like button in order to defeat the evil
00:52and let's get started all right so first
00:54on the list is going to be
00:56anthropology this is the study of human
00:58societies as well as their development
01:00at the beginning of their career the
01:01first five years you're gonna make
01:02somewhere around forty two thousand
01:05and then after the first ten years aka
01:08you'll make on average around seventy
01:10thousand now these definitely aren't the
01:11best numbers if you compare them to some
01:13of the better degrees on the list or
01:14really any of the degrees on the list on
01:16top of that it's going to be pretty
01:17tough to even find a job in anthropology
01:19and so for that reason a lot of the
01:21people who graduate with this degree
01:22will end up working in completely
01:25now it is an undeniably interesting
01:27subject that's why over 10
01:28000 people every single year graduate
01:30with this degree that being said
01:31interesting subject not very much market
01:33demand and so for that reason
01:35this one is going to go into f tier f
01:38for forever in debt hey and if you think
01:40i'm being too mean here there's nothing
01:42wrong with following your passions i've
01:43said this over and over again
01:44as long as you make sure that you have
01:46enough freedom coupons to pay for your
01:48day-to-day expenses or as like the
01:50government calls them
01:51monies and having a few extra fun
01:53coupons to enjoy life isn't a bad thing
01:55either but if you can't make any money
01:56from your passions then keep doing them
01:58just do them as hobbies or at the very
02:00least if you still want to do it
02:02professionally don't spend
02:0380 000 on a college degree go 40 000 in
02:06instead don't go to college and start a
02:08youtube channel or a blog about your
02:10passion instead next one on the list is
02:12going to be archaeology and this one is
02:14very similar to anthropology but it's
02:16even worse now this one is the study of
02:18human history and prehistory mostly
02:20through the analysis of artifacts and
02:23with this degree you'll start off making
02:24forty three thousand dollars a year and
02:26mid-career pay is going to be around
02:29now as you can probably imagine there's
02:30pretty much no jobs available as
02:32archaeologists or anthropologists the
02:34few jobs that are available are going to
02:36require at the very least like a
02:37master's degree maybe even a doctorate
02:40and there's not even that many of those
02:42archaeologists and anthropologists are
02:43going to make around 63 000
02:45a year there's 6 500 jobs available and
02:48it is saying that it's growing at 10
02:50which is faster than average but 10 of 6
02:53isn't that much that's 650 and when you
02:55consider that 10 000 people are
02:57graduating with this degree every single
02:59the numbers just don't make sense and i
03:01know that a few people unsubscribe
03:02whenever i give my practical advice like
03:05this and i have a message for you
03:06okay who are you just kidding but
03:08seriously i tell you guys this stuff
03:10because i care about you and i want you
03:11to make good decisions for your future
03:13and you're not going to be able to make
03:14good decisions unless you're well
03:16informed next one on the list is going
03:18criminal justice this one is basically
03:20the study of the delivery of justice for
03:22those who have committed crimes
03:23crimes all the way from stealing to much
03:25more serious crimes such as forgetting
03:27to smash the like button on one of my
03:29i will find you now you'd think that you
03:31could become a police officer with this
03:33one and that's right you can the only
03:34issue here is the vast majority of the
03:36time you don't need to get this degree
03:38in order to become a police officer
03:40a lot of the time you don't need to get
03:42any degree at all sure there are very
03:44specific circumstances where getting
03:46this type of degree from a certain
03:47program might help you to achieve a
03:49particular career that you're going for
03:51but for the most part you absolutely
03:53don't need it still a ton of people
03:55graduate with this degree
03:56every single year over 40 000 now you'll
03:58start off making around forty three
04:00thousand dollars a year and mid career
04:02pay is going to be seventy one thousand
04:03it's also good to note that the meaning
04:05percentage is going to be around fifty
04:07seven percent which is much higher than
04:09now overall these stats are still pretty
04:11mediocre but the reason this one's
04:13better than some of the jobs i already
04:15is there are actual jobs out there that
04:17you can get you don't actually
04:18need to get this degree in order to get
04:20most of those jobs however
04:21there are jobs you can get that make
04:23sense if you get this degree
04:25so this one is going to go into c tier c
04:28for criminal minds is the best crime
04:29show let's be honest now if you play
04:31your cards right this one could be good
04:33but if not the student loans that you
04:34is going to be nasty
04:38next one on the list is going to be
04:40communications and this is one of the
04:42popular degrees out there a ton of
04:43people graduate with this degree every
04:46in fact it's over 80 000. now this one
04:49is the study about how to effectively
04:50communicate information in the different
04:52various fields now this one is a very
04:54popular one it seems for people who
04:56either have no idea what they're doing
04:58they're student athletes and they're
04:59just trying to take the easiest classes
05:02now the big problem with this degree in
05:03my opinion is that it's just
05:05way too general sure being able to
05:07communicate information is a valuable
05:09skill but so is being able to continue
05:11breathing you're not technically wrong
05:12about that but you're also not going to
05:14be able to find a job
05:15in breathing this one is going to go
05:19d for difficulty level is 1 out of 10.
05:21next on the list is going to be
05:22economics and this is the study of the
05:24production consumption and transfer of
05:27wealth now with this degree you can
05:28expect to earn around 56
05:30000 starting out and that nearly doubles
05:32in mid-career pay to 107
05:34000 these are by far the best statistics
05:37on the list and honestly it isn't even
05:39it can be a little bit tough for you to
05:40get your first job but once you do you
05:42get some experience you get your foot in
05:43the door you're going to be golden
05:45there's also a ton of different options
05:46for people who graduate with an
05:48economics degree some of them will end
05:49up working in the finance industry for
05:51this one is going to go into s tier s
05:55next one on the list is going to be
05:56education and i think this one is pretty
05:58self-explanatory you get an education
06:00degree in order to become a teacher some
06:02of you might even be watching this in
06:04class right now when you're supposed to
06:05be paying attention to the teacher
06:07just kidding i make family friendly
06:09content on this channel but my
06:11definitely isn't kids because i want to
06:13remain monetized thanks susan now you're
06:15going to start off making around 41 000
06:17a year and mid-career pay is going to be
06:1963 000. on top of that it has a pretty
06:22good meaning score at 67
06:24still the pay here is obviously
06:26extremely low and for that reason this
06:28one just isn't a very good opportunity i
06:30wish it was but it isn't this one is
06:33d tier d for disappointed in our
06:35education system next one on the list is
06:37going to be geography
06:39this is the study of the physical
06:40features of the earth as well as the
06:42distribution of human population
06:43and activities now you can expect to
06:45make around forty five thousand dollars
06:47a year starting out and seventy six
06:49thousand dollars in mid-career pay these
06:50are okay numbers overall but nothing to
06:53it does amaze me how few people know
06:56basic geography though like it
06:57it never ceases to amaze me this one is
07:01c tier c for england as my city next one
07:04on the list is going to be history and i
07:06think this one is pretty
07:07self-explanatory as well you can make
07:10000 a year starting out and mid-career
07:11pay is going to be 80 000
07:13a year this is actually one of my
07:14favorite subjects but of course i would
07:16never pick it as a career
07:18because of the fact that there's almost
07:19no jobs out there for historians
07:21and something that you really love to do
07:23but it doesn't have any market demand
07:25aka nobody is willing to pay you money
07:26in order to do it is what's called a
07:29so instead i just do it on the side i
07:30listen to podcasts and i watch youtube
07:32channels and blogs and all that sort of
07:34this one is going to go into d tier d
07:37for check out dan carlin's hardcore
07:39history if you like history as well
07:41next one on the list is going to be
07:42linguistics this is the scientific study
07:46and its structure so this one is going
07:47to start off at 48 000
07:49a year and mid-career pay is going to be
07:52not as bad as you probably thought but
07:54still not that great either
07:56this one is going to go into d tier as
07:59d for dothraki next on the list is going
08:01to be political science the branch of
08:03knowledge that deals with the systems of
08:05and the analysis of political activity
08:07and behavior so for instance you might
08:09study why congress can't get the
08:11freaking second stimulus package passed
08:13with this degree you're gonna start off
08:14at forty six thousand dollars a year and
08:16the mid-career pay is going to be around
08:18eighty nine thousand this is one of the
08:19better options on the list for sure
08:21along with a pretty decent salary
08:23there's also a lot of government related
08:25jobs that you can get with this degree
08:26those jobs tend to not only pay well but
08:28they also have really good benefits
08:30this one is going to go into a tier a
08:33am i the only one who's sick and tired
08:34of hearing about politics 24 7.
08:36next one on the list is going to be
08:38philosophy this is the study of the
08:40fundamental nature of knowledge reality
08:42and existence now this is an interesting
08:44one for sure because the numbers for
08:45this one actually aren't that bad
08:47this one you're going to start off at 47
08:49000 a year and then it's going to be 87
08:51000 for mid-career pay
08:53of course there aren't that many jobs
08:54out there for philosophers as you can
08:56probably imagine however i think the
08:58pretty decent numbers is this is a
09:01subject that attracts a lot of
09:02very smart people these are the types of
09:04people that can go out and do a bunch of
09:06other things in their life
09:08as well you could also make a good
09:09argument that although it might not
09:11directly lead to you getting a really
09:14it might teach you a lot of practical
09:15knowledge that will indirectly lead to
09:17you having a better life in general and
09:19also making more money
09:20i'm going to go ahead and put this one
09:23b for books or free at your local
09:25library next one on the list is going to
09:28this is the scientific study of the
09:30human mind as well as its functions
09:32now psychology is one of the most
09:34popular majors out there it's got over a
09:36hundred thousand people graduating with
09:37this degree every single year i have a
09:39very strong opinion on psychology and
09:41it's pretty unpopular but it's a
09:43completely overrated degree
09:45is there a need for mental health
09:46professionals in the us and probably all
09:49over the world especially with this
09:50lockdown and everything that's going on
09:52yes however at least here in the us most
09:55of these jobs require at least
09:57a master's bare minimum you've got to
09:59have a master's and a lot of them even
10:00require a doctoral level degree
10:02with a four-year bachelor degree you
10:04will be lucky to find a really crappy
10:07psychology job where everybody else is
10:09trying to get the same job you're not
10:10getting paid that well you're going to
10:11get worked really hard
10:12and if you don't like it there's 10
10:14other unemployed psychology grads that
10:16would be happy to take your place
10:17this is a basic supply and demand
10:19principle here a ton of people love
10:21psychology and there's not that many
10:22jobs out there for psychologists and so
10:25the supply is much more than the demand
10:27still if you are willing to go to
10:28graduate school and you know what you're
10:30getting yourself into
10:31you know that you're gonna have to go to
10:32graduate school don't be surprised after
10:34four years and you can't find a job
10:36there definitely is a need for this
10:37degree at the masters or the doctoral
10:40level but in terms of an undergraduate
10:42degree i'm gonna have to go ahead and
10:44d tier d for the most overrated degree
10:47may be the most overrated next one on
10:49the list is going to be urban
10:50and regional planning this is going to
10:52be the study of the development
10:54as well as the design of land that
10:56people will inhabit these are basically
10:57the people that make sure that traffic
10:59doesn't end up in your city like it is
11:01in la you start off making around forty
11:03seven thousand dollars a year and
11:04mid-career pay is going to be around
11:06eighty eight thousand
11:07with a pretty nice meeting score of
11:08fifty four percent this is actually a
11:10pretty decent degree
11:11and i think it can be pretty useful this
11:13one is going to go into
11:15b-tier b for i bet a few of you are
11:17watching this while you're stuck in
11:19next one on the list is going to be most
11:21studies-related degrees
11:23so these are going to be degrees that
11:24have the word studies in it these
11:28really really bad an example of this
11:31and family studies which starts off
11:34a year and then 42 000 is the mid-career
11:37pay or of course the infamous
11:39gender studies degree which starts off
11:42000 a year and mid-career pay is 57 000.
11:45that's awful and many of the other
11:46studies degrees are just like this
11:48they're not going to teach you any of
11:49the skills that are in demand
11:51in the real world they might be super
11:53interesting subjects i'm not arguing
11:55maybe double major in them if you really
11:57love them minor in them if you kind of
11:59like them a little bit study them on the
12:01side all you want but do not major in
12:03these types of degrees
12:04this one is going to go into f tier f
12:08these degrees will prepare you to be a
12:10fast food worker now there's a few
12:11things that i want to talk about when it
12:12comes to liberal arts related degrees
12:15that are specific to these now first of
12:17all i want to talk about number one
12:19is you need to learn marketable skills
12:21although a lot of these degrees are very
12:24they might help you a lot in your life
12:25they might enrich your life all of that
12:27is great it's tough to justify how
12:29learning these types of skills
12:31is going to get you a good job i think
12:33double majoring in these degrees if
12:35you're really passionate about one of
12:36them is a great idea
12:37minoring in it is a good idea as well
12:39studying it on the side is awesome but
12:41don't do it as your primary degree
12:43unless we're talking about economics or
12:44one of the better ones on the list
12:46what you really want to do instead is
12:48focus on learning marketable skills
12:50and by that i mean skills that people in
12:52the real world are willing to pay you
12:54money in order for you to do
12:56number two i want to talk about getting
12:58work or internship experience
13:00so this is very important especially
13:02when it comes to these types of degrees
13:04you really want to figure out what type
13:06of career you're going for and then
13:07figure out the steps that you need to
13:09get there i talk about this all the time
13:11but one of the most important steps
13:12you'll find in just about any degree or
13:14career that you're going for
13:15is working slash getting internship
13:17experience number three on this list i
13:20networking now networking is one of
13:22those things that scares a lot of people
13:23and i get it i'm an introvert too
13:25i wasn't always very good at networking
13:27and i've been trying to get a little bit
13:28better about it now if you know what
13:30career you're going for
13:32networking becomes so much easier a lot
13:34of the time people just go to random
13:36events and they just try to randomly
13:37meet people and it's like they don't
13:39even know why they're meeting people
13:41they're just doing it just to do it
13:42because they heard that it's a good idea
13:44realistically if you know what career
13:46you're going for you're going to know
13:47what clubs you should join you're going
13:48to know what events that you should go
13:50to there are a lot of people out there
13:52at a certain position and they might be
13:54looking for someone that they can teach
13:55and mentor and then there's a lot of
13:57people out there that are looking for
13:59number four on this list i want to talk
14:00about double majoring or minoring in
14:03so if you want to go for one of these
14:04degrees that's either c tier or lower
14:07you're probably going to want to double
14:08major in something else that's a little
14:11you might want to major in something
14:12that's practical and then just
14:14minor in one of these gently tap the
14:16like button hit the subscribe button
14:18ring the notification bell and comment
14:19down below any thoughts comments
14:22and definitely make sure to check out my
14:24other videos right here i made them
