00:00what's happening guys it's shane here
00:01and today i'm going to be talking about
00:03one of my favorite careers it's called
00:05sales development representative also
00:08known as tech sales software sales and
00:11business development representative all
00:12those are basically the same thing and
00:15the reason this is one of my favorite
00:16careers is because it basically meets
00:18every single criteria that i have and i
00:21have a lot of them for instance there's
00:22a relatively low barrier to entry so you
00:25can actually get into this career
00:27without a college degree and without any
00:29experience so you can switch over from
00:31another career that you're not happy
00:32with on top of that it doesn't take very
00:34long to get into it usually about less
00:36than six months sometimes a year at most
00:38and you can get paid a lot right away
00:40and then on top of that you can get paid
00:42even more once you have a little bit of
00:43experience it's also extremely flexible
00:46and it has a skill set that you can
00:47carry over into other careers or if you
00:49want to start a business now when i was
00:51researching this i came across somebody
00:52who was able to become a sales
00:54development representative at a very
00:56young age 19 years old and then once he
00:58became one and had some success with it
01:00he actually started teaching other
01:02people how to get into it as well his
01:04name is troy and i reached out to him
01:05tried to get him to come on the channel
01:07and i was able to do it so without
01:08further ado let's go ahead jump right
01:10into the interview now what's happening
01:13guys it's shane here welcome back to the
01:15channel and today i am very excited to
01:18welcome troy troy is a special guest of
01:21mine i tried to get him on the channel
01:22because i saw some of his work online
01:26and basically he has a really cool story
01:28which i'm gonna have him share with you
01:30he is in tech sales uh thank you for
01:33coming on the channel troy yeah thanks
01:35for introducing me shane i'm really
01:37excited to talk with you and share my
01:40passion for technology sales and really
01:43helping more people break into this
01:46amazing industry awesome well let's jump
01:48right into it um share your story with
01:51the audience yeah so i really started my
01:53career in technology sales at just 18
01:58so i was contemplating whether i should
02:00go to college or not uh and as you can
02:02imagine as an 18 year old it's a really
02:05high pressure decision it's like should
02:08i go to college should i go into debt
02:10will i actually be able to utilize the
02:12education that i go to college for uh or
02:15are there other paths to start a great
02:17career so i was really trying to try to
02:20and 18 years old i decided there had to
02:22be a better way i want to start my
02:24career in sales i just need to figure
02:26out how to get my foot in the door
02:28and i realized that technology sales is
02:31this really booming industry it pays
02:33great the career path's amazing so i
02:36just have to figure out how to get my
02:39uh so and i was able to figure it out so
02:42i was able to get my foot in the door
02:43with a small startup
02:46and i was able to start as an intern
02:48making about 15 bucks an hour quickly
02:51got promoted to a full-time technology
02:54sales rep where i was at 18 years old no
02:57debt able to very comfortably support
02:59myself in downtown atlanta paying for
03:02everything so no need to rely on my
03:04parents anymore which is pretty nice and
03:06by age 19 got promoted to a an account
03:09executive actually an enterprise account
03:11executive so imagine sitting at
03:14boardroom meetings closing large
03:16six-figure deals taking in some some
03:19really healthy five-figure commission
03:20checks uh so it felt pretty nice to be
03:23that young and really achieve some
03:25success very quickly
03:31can't do this because it's extremely
03:33difficult to start your career without
03:35college since pretty much all companies
03:37are going to want to require that degree
03:40especially just to get your foot in the
03:41door it's like every single job posting
03:43this is a four-year degree required
03:46so i wanted to figure out a way to help
03:48more people get into this industry
03:50really as a college alternative without
03:54uh previous experience or a degree and i
03:56realized the way to do that is by
03:58creating internships for non-college
04:01students so what i realize is the main
04:05uh is people that can't start a
04:07professional career without college
04:09because they cannot get an internship
04:11without college so what i did is i
04:13created this business called course
04:14careers where we take people train them
04:17online in technology sales partner
04:19directly with companies and create these
04:22internships and then we make that
04:24connection so we connect our students
04:25that we trained directly with these
04:27internships at companies and now we have
04:30a bunch of 18 19 year olds people
04:33switching their careers in their 40s
04:35everyone transitioning into technology
04:39that's really really my story got it
04:41awesome well let's jump right into it uh
04:44usually there's a few things that i
04:46really like to focus on with these
04:47careers and ask people about when
04:49they're in their careers and i think the
04:51most important one out of all this is
04:53actually even more important than salary
04:56is demand so can you talk a little bit
04:59about the demand for people who are
05:00really good at technology sales and
05:03software sales yes that's what's really
05:06crazy about this career is when you
05:07think about high demand careers you're
05:08probably thinking about
05:10software development maybe careers and
05:13the trades uh what a lot of people don't
05:15realize is that technology sales is
05:18actually one of the most in-demand
05:20careers the last time i checked there
05:21was over 400 000 open positions in the
05:25u.s alone uh and these aren't just like
05:28retail positions where you're making
05:29minimum wage these positions pay really
05:32well and employers are really struggling
05:35to hire these people uh specifically
05:38because there's no standardized path to
05:40break into these careers you can't just
05:42go to college and major in tech sales
05:45so companies really struggle to hire
05:47talent they have a ton of open positions
05:50some companies are looking to hire a
05:52hundred plus of these people at any
05:56so it's just the demand is is out of
05:58this world awesome and then the second
06:00big question that everybody always wants
06:02to know what can you expect to get paid
06:05in this career so first of all like what
06:07can you expect to get paid kind of right
06:09off the bat you know first year or so
06:12and then what can you expect to get paid
06:13after maybe like a few years three years
06:16yeah so a lot of people think that some
06:18of the highest paying careers you can go
06:19into are engineering and for the most
06:22part they're right ex with the exception
06:26so specifically in this career
06:29i mean at least the way we do it is we
06:31partner with companies we create these
06:33internships right and these are paid
06:35internships usually the companies pay
06:36anywhere between 15 to 20 an hour
06:39uh and that's what you're gonna make
06:41usually for the first three months
06:43and then once you get that initial work
06:45experience and really prove yourself
06:48after that three months you can expect
06:49to get promoted to a permanent
06:51uh technology sales rep where the
06:53average starting salary is around 60 000
06:56and in some cases companies are actually
06:59paying as much as 80 000 starting so if
07:01you can imagine that your first year you
07:04don't need a degree don't need
07:05experience you're making between 60 to
07:09uh in this position and a lot of
07:12companies are hiring fully remote too
07:14so you don't even need to work in an
07:16office or live in an expensive city
07:18that's pretty awesome and i've told this
07:20story kind of on my channel a few times
07:22before but um i always say there's
07:25certain skills that i think are
07:26incredibly valuable uh coding is
07:30definitely one of them because you can
07:31leverage you know one person create can
07:33create a piece of software that millions
07:34of people can use marketing is another
07:37skill that's incredibly valuable whether
07:39or not you become a marketer or not you
07:41can probably use it in other areas of
07:42your life but maybe even a more valuable
07:45skill than that guys is sales like i
07:48recommend everybody does a sales job at
07:50least one time in their life
07:53and i've told this story on my channel
07:54before i did sales while i was in high
07:56school in college and it was actually my
07:59favorite job ever okay so i had a ton of
08:02fun doing that job i learned so much i
08:04got to come out of my shell i was like a
08:06big time introvert and i got to come out
08:08of my cell by by doing that sales job
08:10um so i recommend that everybody at
08:12least try a sales job at least once in
08:14your life you might not decide that you
08:16want to do it for the rest of your life
08:17but sales can be amazing for the right
08:20type of person it's not for everybody
08:22but it can be amazing for the right type
08:25now with that being said
08:27tech sales specifically
08:29technology is the industry that has the
08:31most opportunity i've talked about that
08:33on the channel quite a bit as well
08:35finance also has quite a bit of
08:36opportunity as well but technology is
08:38really they're king right now especially
08:40when you consider the work life balance
08:42side of things you know you don't have
08:43to work like 80 to 100 hours a week like
08:45you would in finance
08:47so when you combine a super super good
08:49skill set like sales and then you do
08:52that in an industry like technology
08:54you can see these just ridiculous
08:56numbers where you're making 60 80 000 in
08:58your first year 100 000 a few years in
09:01um there's a another fellow youtuber who
09:05does tech sales he made over 500 000 i
09:08might try to get him on the channel at
09:10some point you might know who i'm
09:11talking about um and uh yeah it's just
09:14you can see ridiculous numbers it's not
09:16for everybody but it can be absolutely
09:18phenomenal so i just wanted to kind of
09:20point that out really quickly so what
09:23are some of the salaries because i know
09:24that you are actually partnered with
09:26companies and you literally help your
09:28students uh get positions with those
09:30companies so what are some of the
09:32salaries that those companies are paying
09:33your students yeah so really on the the
09:36low end you're looking at starting
09:37around 60k in your first in on the high
09:39end around 80k so for example one of the
09:42companies we partner with is dun and
09:43bradstreet they're looking to hire over
09:46100 of our students this year alone
09:48and they pay between 65 to 80k starting
09:51depending on how well you interview
09:53uh and that's really just starting
09:56so one of the companies we partner with
09:58another one they're one of the best
09:59technology companies to work for in
10:01florida called no before so they're a
10:04cyber security company
10:05and i was talking with their svp senior
10:08vice president of enterprise sales and
10:10he was telling me how some of his top
10:13technology sales reps are pulling in
10:14between 400 to 700 000 a year in florida
10:19so if you can imagine living in florida
10:22and making that kind of money it's like
10:24what other careers can you do this i
10:27don't think you can do that in
10:28engineering uh you really have to be at
10:30the top of your game and perhaps finance
10:35just to be able to compare
10:37with these top technology sales reps so
10:40the amount of money and potential you
10:43in this industry is ridiculous and
10:45what's more fun than taking executives
10:49out to dinner and getting paid to
10:51literally whine and dying them so just a
10:54all-around amazing career with uh
10:56amazing pay i think one thing we kind of
10:58didn't go over and that's my bad for for
11:01not asking you this but so there's tech
11:03sales and then there's a couple other
11:05different words for it especially if
11:06they want to look up the demand for this
11:08there's sales development representative
11:10business development representative and
11:12then software sales is another keyword
11:14that they use to kind of look it up but
11:15they all fall under generally like the
11:17same umbrella for the most part um so
11:20what exactly is it so i you know and
11:23what i'm kind of getting at is i know
11:25sales jobs are kind of like business to
11:28this type of sales job is a little bit
11:30different it's not like you're some sort
11:32of like sleazy car salesman uh used car
11:36salesman right you're actually selling
11:37to businesses so it's a b2b type sales
11:40job so you can kind of talk about that a
11:43yeah for sure so a lot of people they
11:45have this bad taste in their mouth when
11:46they hear oh i don't want to be a
11:48salesperson because they're thinking oh
11:51they're just going to be working at some
11:52retail stores selling cell phones or
11:55working at a used car dealer uh trying
11:58to convince people to buy some
12:00secondhand car when in reality you're in
12:03professional sales you're selling to
12:06companies uh and what sales really is it
12:09means solving problems
12:11so companies they have a ton of problems
12:14and these problems are really complex so
12:16they don't really know how to solve
12:18these problems and in many cases they
12:20don't even know these problems exist
12:22because they don't have the expertise to
12:25even identify them so you as a
12:27salesperson you're really acting more as
12:29like a consultant so what that means is
12:31you're the person who helps them figure
12:33out how they have these problems and
12:35then pinpoint a solution that hopefully
12:40turns out to be your product your
12:42software your technology product and now
12:45you solve their problems which in turn
12:47is going to help their business save
12:49money or ultimately make money uh so
12:52really you're you're solving problems uh
12:55maybe an example i could give real quick
12:57is let's say you're a call center
12:59business right you got 100 employees all
13:02uh answering the the phone
13:05helping customers solve some of the
13:06issues they may be having as that call
13:09center you're going to need a way to
13:10route calls to the right employees
13:13handle tickets follow up on support
13:15requests all these different tasks
13:17you'll need to be doing as a business
13:21really going to need some sort of
13:23software managing all of that on the
13:26so if this company currently isn't using
13:28something or if they're using something
13:29that might not be working so well you as
13:32a sales rep can go to that call center
13:33and say hey i have this piece of
13:34software that's going to better route
13:36your calls better manage all your
13:38tickets and ultimately help your
13:40customers be happier which is going to
13:43generate more revenue from every
13:45customer making you all this money which
13:47pays for my software uh and that could
13:50be a hundred thousand dollar a five
13:52hundred thousand dollar deal and you as
13:55a sales rep uh you're gonna get paid
13:58when they purchase it from you so you're
13:59really you're literally getting paid to
14:01help people solve their problems which
14:03is just incredible awesome and then i
14:06know that you have uh a free training
14:09where you basically uh you know if
14:11somebody is questioning like hey i'm not
14:12sure if this is right for me or
14:14something like that you have a free
14:16training that will kind of answer that
14:17question so you want to kind of talk
14:18about that a little bit yeah so
14:21our business course careers i mean we
14:22train you online and technology sales
14:25connect you with these companies
14:27and exchange the companies they drop
14:29their degree and they drop their
14:30experience requirements for students who
14:32finish our course so literally no no
14:34requirements at all to get your foot in
14:35the door we have 18 year olds and 19
14:37year olds who have barely ever had a job
14:40before find success with our program and
14:42now we're on track to make over 60k in
14:44their first year uh and we put together
14:46this free introduction course this free
14:48training course that really teaches you
14:50the whole nine yards about what being a
14:53technology sales rep involves so what
14:56your day-to-day would actually be like
14:58uh what can you expect from the initial
15:01training what kind of background and
15:03qualifications you need to be successful
15:06so we put this whole training together
15:07it's on our website coursecareers.com
15:12uh and shane uh do you have a link in
15:15the the comments or yeah yeah i i will
15:18go ahead i'll put a link in the
15:20description i'll put it in the comments
15:22and if the youtube system allows me i
15:24might put something like up here i'm
15:27actually not sure if they allow me to do
15:28that but yeah i'll try to do that as
15:31yes it does i i went through the
15:33training as well and it's it's really
15:35good it's yeah it was it was actually
15:36really insightful in fact i'm using that
15:38training in order to make a video script
15:41i i texted you about it so that i have
15:43permission i'm actually using some of
15:45the stuff some of the stats from that
15:46training in order to write one of my
15:49so it's really good training
15:51very in-depth so i put a whole lot of
15:53work into that uh and like i said
15:57there's no specific background that you
15:59need to be successful in this position
16:02anyone can do it so if it sounds
16:03interesting to you definitely check out
16:05that the introduction course and go
16:07through the free training all right and
16:09then i think just one last thing uh one
16:11of the big reasons why i wanted to get
16:13you on this channel is because i saw
16:15some of the interviews you had with your
16:17students and i saw some of the results
16:20you were getting them and you know i've
16:23been doing this whole thing like helping
16:24people find their ideal careers for
16:26quite some time now and you know
16:28typically if you can get somebody a job
16:30in like six months to a year
16:32especially if it's a job without any
16:34experience that's actually good like a
16:36lot of the times you know boot camps for
16:38coding and all that sort of thing
16:39they'll say like hey we can get you a
16:40job within 18 months or like 12 months
16:43but there are some circumstances where
16:45you're literally getting people a job
16:47within one month before the course is
16:49even over which is just totally
16:51ridiculous so can you kind of just talk
16:54about maybe uh some specific examples
16:56and then just generally speaking how
16:58long it's taking a lot of your students
17:00to get jobs for sure yeah i think the
17:02demand from employers is what really
17:05makes this process so quick just because
17:07the demand is out of this world and
17:09employers really need to hire quickly uh
17:12so maybe a few examples i'll give you so
17:14one example is one of our students he
17:16was working as a janitor for the past
17:18two years uh dropped out of college was
17:2124 years old literally this person you
17:24would have had no idea uh just a month
17:27or a couple months later in his case
17:29he'd be working in technology sales on
17:32track to make around 80 000 in his first
17:35year so i think more than more than
17:37tripling his his current salary and now
17:40having full benefits and working fully
17:43uh so technology sells us not a
17:46extremely complex career
17:48so we actually have a lot of students
17:50who complete our entire course in around
17:5320 days and a week later they have a job
17:57offer which is crazy because even if you
18:00look at boot camps maybe the training
18:02let's say it lasts one year they'll
18:04throw out the expectation that it might
18:06take six months to land a position where
18:09currently we're averaging between one to
18:11two weeks for multiple job offers
18:15and the big reason for that is because
18:16we partner with all these employers that
18:18drop all of their requirements for the
18:20students who finish our program so right
18:22once you finish you're interviewing with
18:24a ton of companies literally as many
18:26companies as you want to interview with
18:28that's what we can get you in front of
18:30because we're partnering with a ton of
18:31companies every single week and our
18:33average student within just one to two
18:34weeks of finishing is walking out with
18:36multiple job offers so they can really
18:39optimize for the company and the
18:40position that they like the best uh so
18:44yeah really compared to other careers uh
18:46the the time to get your foot in the
18:48door uh and start making a ton of money
18:53unparalleled compared to anything else
18:55all right well thank you again for
18:57coming on the channel that was really
18:59awesome i am going to try to get some of
19:01your students on the channel in the
19:02future uh might be a little bit uh
19:05later on from when this interview gets
19:07posted just because i'm traveling and
19:11again guys uh free training is gonna be
