00:00how to get a BS in software engineering
00:03in as little as six months at WGU which
00:07stands for Western Governors University
00:09that's what this video is about if you
00:11appreciate me doing this type of content
00:12go ahead and gently tap that like button
00:14and let's jump into it now in this video
00:16we are going to be answering questions
00:18like is a software development degree
00:20from WGU worth it how long does it take
00:23to get a software development degree
00:24from WGU can you do it in as little as
00:27six months like people claim on the
00:29internet and overall I'm going to talk
00:30about why it might be a good option for
00:32you or why it might not be the best
00:34choice and I'm going to be dropping some
00:35massive secrets in this video that
00:38before now I've only revealed to
00:40Consulting clients and I'm going to walk
00:42you through step by step exactly how to
00:44do it and I created a resource that is
00:45going to make it ridiculously easy it's
00:48basically a cheat sheet so before I
00:50start this video I'm going to assume
00:52that you've already chosen the school as
00:54well as the degree that you want to get
00:56and in this particular case I'm going to
00:57be using the example of WGU and getting
01:00a software development degree now there
01:03are other alternative schools where you
01:05can do this accelerated route and I talk
01:07about them in this video right here so
01:09definitely check that out but assuming
01:10you've already chosen those two things
01:12the first step you want to do is to go
01:14ahead and transfer in all of your
01:17existing credits to WGU so you want to
01:19get your transcript together and when
01:21you're doing this you really want to get
01:23creative with it because there are a ton
01:25of different things that you can
01:26transfer in this list includes but is
01:29not limited to certifications classes
01:31you took during High School AP IB
01:33classes classes you took during college
01:35if you took maybe one semester or
01:37something like that work experience and
01:39Military experience so yeah make sure
01:41you talk with the counselor and go over
01:43what experience you can transfer in now
01:45I did create a cheat sheet spreadsheet
01:47for you that actually has all of the
01:49classes that you have to take for this
01:50particular degree listed I will put that
01:52down in the description and the pinned
01:54comment below now once you transfer all
01:56of these classes in you are going to get
01:59a list of classes that you have to take
02:01back and at this point you want to move
02:03on to step number two which is use
02:05third-party companies in order to test
02:07out of the additional classes now you
02:09might be thinking hey WGU is an
02:11accelerated University you can get this
02:13stuff done really quickly so why would I
02:15take these classes outside of it well
02:17the reason is because you can get it
02:18done even more quickly by taking these
02:21third-party classes and on top of that
02:23it's much more affordable
02:26and for the BS and software development
02:28you do have to take about 34 classes now
02:31even if you're working you got a family
02:32you're super busy Etc you can still
02:34relatively easily knock out about one
02:36class per week and many students that I
02:38have recommended this to have knocked
02:40out many classes in a single week right
02:42so in a lot of cases especially the
02:43easier classes you can get done with
02:45them in like one day the big thing here
02:47is you just need to manage your time
02:48right try to dedicate a certain amount
02:50of time every single day to knocking
02:52these classes out now the three
02:53companies that people typically use the
02:55most are going to be study.com
02:57straighterline.com and sophia.org in my
03:00experience the best one is study.com
03:02that's the one that I recommend and on
03:04that cheat sheet you will see all the
03:06classes that link from WGU to study.com
03:08and if you click on the link it'll take
03:11you directly to the study.com class
03:14however there are still a few classes
03:16that study.com doesn't offer that either
03:18straighterline or Sophia do and I have
03:20those listed on the sheet as well so
03:22again this is basically like a cheat
03:23sheet it makes the entire process
03:25ridiculous easy so once you finish these
03:27classes you're going to want to go ahead
03:29transfer all of them in and then you're
03:30going to get a list back of the
03:31remaining classes you have to take once
03:33you get this list what you want to do is
03:35move on to step number three which is
03:37pre-study all of those classes now the
03:39reason that you're pre-studying is
03:41because you do not want to have to be
03:43enrolled in WGU for more than one or two
03:46terms at Max and the way that you can do
03:48that is by pre-studying the classes
03:50before you actually enroll so out of the
03:53classes that are left there are many
03:54different options to do pre-study for
03:56some of the best resources I have found
03:58are the WGU subreddits so WGU has a
04:02subreddit on its own and then a lot of
04:03the time they will have subreddits for
04:05the individual degrees as well and on
04:07those subreddits people will discuss
04:08their best advice for studying these
04:10classes uh you know taking the classes
04:12using study.com Sophia or straighterline
04:15and also how to pass the tests oh
04:18there's also tons of free resources
04:20online as well you can check out there's
04:21YouTube Khan Academy is a great resource
04:24as well sometimes there'll be some
04:25really good classes you can take on
04:26sites like udemy and those are very
04:28cheap a lot of the time they're like you
04:29know 10 to 20 dollars and if you're a
04:31textbook type person you can order an
04:33old textbook that's like three to five
04:34years old for something like 10 or 20 as
04:37well so finally after you've pre-studied
04:39all these classes you're going to move
04:40on to step four which is enroll in WGU
04:43and knock the classes out as fast as
04:45possible now software development
04:47degrees take on average about four years
04:50if you do it full time and there are
04:52many reports on the internet of people
04:53getting through these degrees in much
04:55shorter periods of time oftentimes it's
04:57two and a half two years sometimes even
05:00as low as six months
05:02but realistically if you're a normal
05:04person that has a busy life and you
05:06don't have any previous experience you
05:08can still probably get it done in around
05:10two years and also while you're enrolled
05:12make sure to take advantage of the WGU
05:14instructors especially for the more
05:16difficult classes like software
05:18development Capstone or the it
05:19application course all right now I'm
05:22going to jump into my computer and give
05:23you an exact example of how you would do
05:25this all right so we're back on the
05:27trusty spreadsheet and as you can see we
05:30have all the classes you have to take
05:31and on top of that we have these
05:33certifications and certificates that you
05:35can transfer in as well so let's just
05:37give an example down here let's say that
05:41you transferred in several classes so
05:43you know you took one semester of
05:45college maybe you took some AP classes
05:47in high school and on top of that you
05:49decided to knock out these
05:51certifications as well so as you can see
05:53here you knocked out English and math
05:54because you took the AP classes when you
05:57were in high school and then on top of
05:58that you took one semester at Community
06:00College and you knocked out
06:01Communications Arts economics and
06:04computer science and then you went a
06:06little bit further and you knocked out
06:07some of these certifications as well so
06:10you would go ahead and transfer all of
06:12those classes in and then you would move
06:14on to the next phase which is the test
06:16out phase so in this part you would
06:18start testing out of all the classes
06:19using study.com straighterline and
06:21Sophia and as you can see you are able
06:24to test out of most of these classes so
06:26after you got done with that you would
06:27go ahead and transfer all those classes
06:29in and move on to the next phase which
06:31is to pre-study the remaining classes so
06:34as you can see here there aren't that
06:36many classes left there's one two three
06:39four five six seven eight nine ten
06:42classes left so you'd pre-study all 10
06:45classes and when you were done with the
06:47pre-study you felt confident about it
06:48you would go ahead and enroll and knock
06:51those classes out as fast as possible
06:53and doing it this way it is very
06:55possible to knock all these classes out
06:57in one term now my friend Josh matacor
07:00took this to the extreme he actually
07:01took the hardest degree you that WGU has
07:04to offer which is computer science and
07:06he knocked it out in two months so it's
07:09definitely possible to only be enrolled
07:11at WGU for six months and in terms of
07:13the total time it takes for you to knock
07:15the classes out study everything Etc you
07:17can definitely do it in under a year now
07:19by the way if you appreciate me using
07:21this video and you want to save a little
07:23bit of money using study.com go ahead
07:25and do Shane hummus during checkout
07:28you'll save 30 on your first three
07:30months with study.com and you'll also
07:32help the channel out a little bit when
07:34you use that coupon code if you want to
07:36learn more about WGU and whether it's
07:39worth it or not definitely check this
07:40video out right here where I go over all
07:42the pros and cons of WGU and whether
07:45it's worth it for you or not but with
07:47that being said this degree gets a big
07:48thumbs up from me definitely not going
07:51to be for everybody it is online you
07:53know it's remote you have to sort of be
07:55somebody who can motivate yourself
07:57you're also not going to be around a
07:59bunch of other people it does suffer
08:01when it comes to network but overall WGU
08:03is an awesome school I've recommended
08:05them to quite a few people it's not
08:07perfect for everyone but it is perfect
08:08for a lot of people that I talk to so
08:10yeah check that video out right here
08:12gently tap the like button hit the

08:16comments criticisms Etc especially if
08:19you went to WGU definitely comment down
08:21below we want to hear your thoughts on
08:22it whether it's positive or negative and
08:24I will see you next time
