00:00being perfect is very exhausting it's a
00:02never-ending race how I built a great
00:04data visualization I'm presenting it to
00:07manager hey draw things out in
00:10brainstorm how our markets have been
00:12performing I'm going to be in town for a
00:13whole month Lillian how do you improve
00:19yourself hello good morning morning good
00:24morning good morning everyone it is
00:26currently 8 a.m. and this is like my
00:30sacred morning time making my favorite
00:32avocado toast today woo perfectly ried
00:36from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. I get to do my
00:39own thing like nothing about work
00:41nothing about YouTube just doing the
00:44stuff that I genuinely want to
01:10combination so I'm a type a
01:12perfectionist but as I turned 27 4
01:15months ago that's when I started to
01:16realize you know being perfect is very
01:19exhausting it's a never-ending race I
01:21always feel like you know I can do
01:22better I should do more so recently I've
01:25been rethinking about the concept of
01:27perfection in which what if the moment
01:30that you're yourself you're doing you
01:45yeah looking at my calendar
01:49today there are three buckets of things
01:52I'm doing it's a mix of leadership
01:54analysis and stepping out of my comfort
01:56zone the first one is I am meeting with
01:59a product manager honestly I barely know
02:01anything about products and after launch
02:03I need to work on a monthly business
02:04performance report and then in the
02:05afternoon I've been leading our cly
02:08Business Report and I'm presenting it to
02:09my manager's manager on you know the
02:19deck good how are you so many people saw
02:22the video do you feel famous now I saw
02:26your comments on the deck I built
02:27yesterday oh thank you for the feedback
02:30a lot of you often ask me Lillian how do
02:32you improve yourself any tools books or
02:34podcasts my answer to that is my
02:37co-workers Sometimes the best place to
02:39learn from is the people around you your
02:42co-workers are probably good at
02:43something that's why they're working
02:45here as well so learn from them by
02:46asking strategic questions like this one
02:49what's the ideal outcome for you like
02:51what is your goal from this Insight
02:53synthesis because then from there on I
02:55can think about what Tye of questions to
02:57ask our stakeholders by asking them what
02:59what is your goal for this project it
03:01helps me know how I can do my job better
03:03and it also allows me to see how they
03:05think which then I can learn from okay
03:08yeah mhm okay just to confirm there are
03:11two goals here one is
03:17on Switching gear to the quarterly
03:19Business Report which is a 60 to 80
03:22slight deck where we analyze all the
03:23business metrics to articulate our
03:25business performance because there are a
03:27lot of graphs in this deck so I'm making
03:29sure each graph conveys a key message on
03:31the topic of data visualization there's
03:34a very popular platform when it comes to
03:36visualizing data I want to introduce too

05:23where are the be from by the way
05:25devotion devotion devotion
05:56way I'm doing it I'm doing it
06:00I'm stretching the milk think I did it
06:03look at this boy creamy oat
06:13milk oh this is the best coffee
06:17ever looking at the view and we'll do
06:20our performance report for the
06:22performance report I'm giving our
06:24leadership a quick summary on how our
06:26markets have been performing so I'm
06:27looking at our data dashboards on the
06:29right and visualizing My Data Insights
06:31on the left in a deck and here's my
06:33step-by-step guide on how I build a
06:35great data visualization let's say
06:37you're the business analyst at Facebook
06:39and you're being asked to analyze a
06:41number of new users across its Street of
06:43products in Q4 2023 assuming they only
06:46have four products so messenger dating
06:48Marketplace and groups step one
06:51benchmarking always have a point of
06:53comparison when visualizing so you can
06:55tell a story about whether this number
06:56is good or not the common mistake is to
06:59visual visualiz like this even though
07:01you can see that messenger brought in
07:02100 million users in Q4 and then
07:04Marketplace and so on the graph only
07:07tells us the fact it doesn't tell us a
07:09story about how the users have been
07:11performing one of my favorite ways to
07:13Benchmark data is to compare it against
07:16historical data so in this case Q4 in
07:19previous years this method still shows
07:21us Q4 2023 performance and it also shows
07:25us how each product has been performing
07:27over time to justify our current
07:29always think about how you can tell a
07:31story in your graph but we're not done
07:33yet use color effectively the focal
07:36point is on Q4 2023 so highlight the
07:38focal point and the rest can be shaded
07:40in Gray to maintain Clarity and focus
07:43when showing historical data limited to
07:46three past years or three past quarters
07:48to avoid cluttering the graph step two
07:51annotation the goal of data
07:52visualization is to help your audience
07:55see patterns for business insights I use
07:58arrows text box es and colors to direct
08:01viewers attention so they can understand
08:03this graph quickly here I'm using arrows
08:05to highlight the pattern of all the
08:07products experiencing a decline over the
08:09years in Q4 and interestingly Facebook
08:12Messenger is the only one on the rise
08:14step three call out the Insight so
08:17you're noticing the pattern then ask
08:19yourself why is that what Insight are
08:21you trying to convey with this pattern
08:23traditionally many people write the
08:25inside on the right side of the graph I
08:28still do that but I also include a super
08:31summarized Insight in the graph as a
08:33call out box this way when people look
08:35at it they know exactly what it's about
08:37without needing to read the full text so
08:40strong growth due to integration with
08:41Instagram our new graph now tells a
08:43story on its own and this allows the
08:45audience to focus their attention more
08:47on the business not the data so like huh
08:50interesting that Instagram integration
08:52could boost user growth why is that
08:54what's the opportunity here a good graph
08:56doesn't need extra explanation it should
08:59visually summarize the key points you're
09:01trying to make I'm going to make instant
09:03pot chicken noodle soup because it's
09:04really cold these days want to eating
09:07it's typical lunch doesn't look too
09:09pretty but it's got all the essential
09:11macronutrients bye you want to eat my
09:15chicken no yeah you don't eat lunch I've
09:18been practicing my latte art wow let Dre
09:21this little heart here for who for me or
09:23for you yeah you can have it you want it
09:25no I don't thank you I'll scoop it I
09:28you back to his beer
09:40table you might want to move cuz I'm
09:43going to open this it's going to burn
09:45your face off you want that sure do it
09:47you do do it no seriously I'm scared for
09:50you I need a whole Bella to make sure
09:52she just get scared to the
09:54noise you're holding her like you're
10:06try to cucumber and marinated
10:09yesterday yeah this is so
10:27M I've been craving fruits as my
10:37sweets I'm a very visualized person I
10:41always draw things on in brainstorm this
10:43is the brainstorming backbone for the
10:46data visualization tip in this video
10:49have the visual first and then I write
11:10on let's go let's go I take you on a PE
11:19trick I accidentally filmed on time
11:22lapse but she knows where she's going
