00:04josh what are you doing
00:06uh playing this space jam uh michael
00:09jordan electronic game the jordan
00:12no we're not filming that jordan
00:22oh the boss the boston yeah oh not so
00:25it's not this no that's a space it's not
00:28tiger and all that stuff no no
00:30oh the boston oh well this is the one
00:33they started like as a nuclear company
00:36yeah that's a tough story to tell it's a
00:38lot of a lot of work
00:39well you better figure it out okay i
00:41guess we rolled the intro thing and i'll
00:55jordan electronics has some of the
00:58coolest effects made in the 60s and 70s
01:00you've probably heard of the boss tone a
01:04and then there's things like the jordan
01:05creator and a host of
01:07other devices that i have all right here
01:11in typical fashion i can't just talk
01:13about the pedals when there's such a
01:16so i need you to hang with me because
01:18it's crazy and we're going to start in
01:21let's go it all starts in 1925.
01:25this is six years before the electric
01:27guitar is even invented
01:29it's smack dab in the middle of world
01:31war one and world war
01:33ii and it's the year that a physicist
01:35named otto glacier devises an
01:37electrometer dosimeter one of these kind
01:40he gets some help from a guy named jack
01:43and basically this is when x-ray
01:45technology was just starting to take
01:47off in the medical field but no one was
01:50really sure how to measure it this guy
01:53he helped invent a device to track how
01:55much radiation you were exposed to
01:58at a time so doctors could measure it
02:01that's the basics so in 1928 jack
02:04decided to start his own company
02:06victorine instrument company this has
02:08nothing to do with musical instruments
02:10it's nuclear instruments but they became
02:13known as the world's
02:14first nuclear company to me that
02:18sounds like a pretty big deal during
02:21they performed top secret work for the
02:23very first south pacific atomic bomb
02:27if it was really that top secret would
02:30we be talking about this right now
02:31that's another subject so moving on
02:33the gear that they made is also used in
02:36a lot of sci-fi films so if you're a
02:38film nut you've probably seen some crazy
02:41victorying devices like this being used
02:44for things that are completely
02:45ridiculous and out of context but
02:47you know that's showbiz in the mid-60s
02:50victorine instruments
02:51forms another company called jordan
02:55now originally jordan electronics makes
02:58but a young employee suggests that they
03:00explore the musical instrument market
03:04rock and roll the british invasion the
03:07it's all taken over the world so guitar
03:10massive but it's hard to find affordable
03:13and that is a challenge at this time so
03:16the first thing they do is they
03:18these line of transistorized guitar amps
03:21and they're really popular they're well
03:23among musicians in the 60s like the yard
03:25birds the doors the mamas and the papas
03:28and a lot more again i'm aware this is
03:30like a ton of info so
03:32just hang with me so if you are still
03:34here you're a lot better than the boring
03:36people who already gave up because this
03:38is where it gets really
03:39really good so jordan electronics shows
03:43a little black plastic box at the 1966
03:47namm show and you plug it directly into
03:51your guitar so this has been done
03:53the vox 816 etc but it's not a big thing
03:57but this becomes a smash hit at the time
04:01fuzz was still a new thing to most
04:04pedals like the maserati fuzz right the
04:07maestro fuzz tone solo sound tone bender
04:09and a few others they were available
04:11but nothing looked or sounded quite like
04:14this effect that they called the boss
04:16the design of the boss tone is very well
04:20and it's proof of jordan electronics
04:22design abilities specifically the owner
04:25george cole and the head engineer bob
04:29tons of companies copied this device
04:33vox electro harmonix and that's just a
04:36few so let's jam on these there's
04:38five official versions of this including
04:42um i have the v1 here there's a v2 that
04:44i don't have i have several v3s i have a
04:49they all sound different there's
04:50revisions with each one
04:52so we're just going to play spirit in
04:53the sky a lot of people think he used
04:56on that riff and we're just going to use
04:58every version we're going to patch it
04:59together it's going to be manic it's
05:01going to be beautiful
05:02and you let me know which one you like
05:04most we'll even put a little number down
05:06almost forgot we whipped up this little
05:08box here you just plug it in
05:10guitar in patch cable through out of
05:13to your amp now you know what's going on
05:16and you won't be confused because
05:17we really can't handle a million
05:19comments about how did we hook that up
05:21we love you but not that much
07:12i think honestly that we sound better
07:14than the original song
07:15i try not to be prideful but i'm
07:17basically booking a tour right now where
07:19i just covered this one song all across
07:22you in for that nick yeah yeah i think
07:24it's gonna be good but in all honesty
07:26for the simple two transistor fuzz
07:28circuit that this is
07:30it sounds really cool and it's
07:31definitely a favorite it's quirky you
07:33know you pick up radio signals
07:36it's not shielded well one of the v3
07:38units when i take my hands off the
07:39guitar strings it squeals like a dying
07:42i don't know if you've ever heard that
07:44but i'm from alabama and it's pretty
07:46it was 29.99 when it came out
07:50i'm not good at math but i know it's
07:51pretty cheap i don't know what that
07:54and there is a weird version there's a
07:56picture on the screen right now
07:58if you've ever seen this version i need
08:00you to call me it has a different
08:02font different logo it's the name
08:05photo no one's ever seen the physical
08:07unit but because there's a photo there
08:09was a physical unit and if you have that
08:12unit i really need to own it i don't
08:22the boss tone that you saw was the model
08:262000 is called the vico vibe i cannot
08:30and it doesn't bother me again i'm fine
08:32i don't have a problem but this
08:34is the reissue reproduction by
08:37mahoney you can get these at jordan
08:40he's doing great stuff with carrying on
08:43the history of this line
08:44it's it's a stanky trim circuit it's
08:47it's a little sloppy a little gooey
08:50a lot good and we're gonna play
08:53swampy stink blues thing you know
08:57let's even do like a walk up you guys
08:58want to do like a like a slithering kind
09:46i've never felt more accomplished as a
09:48guitar player by doing that
09:50simple cheesy walk up and resolving on
09:53i mean i'm a legend i'm not
09:57it's actually pretty easy i looked up a
09:59tab on harmony central
10:00kind of figured it out i'm not gonna
10:02brag but i can read tabs the next effect
10:04is the model 3000 it's called the boss
10:08boost now most boosts have volume
10:13but not this one just treble and bass
10:15controls so it's kind of like the
10:16arbiter treble bass face
10:18or maybe my opinion is
10:22that it's some type of replacement for
10:25the dallas range master
10:26so i'm cranking the controls all the way
10:28it gives it some volume i also
10:30turn the amp up past what i would
10:33it's nice um but really
10:36as i always say you're the judge
10:39and the jury and the executioner
11:34jordan has a ton of success especially
11:37the model 1000 and these other two they
11:42but whatever and they decide hey let's
11:46that are in treadle enclosures like law
11:48pedals but let's make them do some
11:50different things the first one they
11:52is the model 4000 and it's called the
11:59i'm just gonna tell you it's not great
12:02good in my opinion but i love it that's
12:05the thing you don't have to like a pedal
12:06to love it i love this pedal and i don't
12:08like it you can figure that out you can
12:10worry about it or you can just move on
12:11like i'm about to move on
12:13but nick's going to take his hands he's
12:14going to move the wah thing we're going
12:17what it sounds like and i just want to
12:18say this too someone removed the
12:20original rubber feet
12:21if you're the type person that would
12:25removing the rubber feet these aren't
12:27even are these original screws
12:29that someone some psychotic
12:32maniac on the verge of insanity took off
12:35original rubber feet original screws to
12:39put it on a pedal board it's not even
12:41good go buy like a forty dollar vox what
12:43this thing is horrible
12:45i'm not even gonna play it
13:06my favorite maybe there's only three i
13:09don't it's hard to have a favorite when
13:11two of three i don't like that
13:14gig thing but i love it again moving on
13:18it's called the vibro sonic it's the
13:21the first thing i love is the color
13:23green they chose it's all about
13:26but this circuit is a true vibrato
13:29circuit i haven't had time to open it up
13:31i've owned it for years but i'm lazy
13:33sometimes i'm not lazy i'm actually
13:35pretty hard-working guy but that's for
13:37another that's another subject
13:39i think it's an amp circuit i think it's
13:41an amp like fender vibrato
13:43i don't know but i'm going to plug it up
13:45with some spring reverb my benson spring
13:49and we're just going to relax we're
13:51going to play something soothing
13:53and you're going to hear this vibrato
13:56again you can do volume with this
13:59but it doesn't even work right so you
14:03the point is this is too big but this
14:06jam is going to be perfect
15:01the last effect from the original line
15:05that we're going to play through today
15:06that's another hint to what's coming but
15:08you know if you hadn't hung around till
15:10now you're not gonna know what's coming
15:12and what i said was kind of pointless
15:14what i'm saying is if you're still with
15:16you're the kind of viewer we care about
15:18we don't care about anybody else here it
15:20this is the model 6000 creator
15:24sustain and volume control and i had the
15:31this pedal is important because let me
15:35i believe with my knowledge of random
15:40that this is the first ever clone of a
15:43this is released in 69 it kind of really
15:46hits the street around 70. this is a
15:50this comes out 70 71
15:53uh i guess i should open the original
15:55box and show it to you is that a good
15:57should i do that yeah notice the box
16:01beautiful box design a lot of people you
16:03know nobody's in the room but i just
16:05want to talk to people
16:06that are not in the room a lot of box
16:09design is overlooked this is a genius
16:11carton design that i can't even open
16:14um so you have a slide tray look at the
16:17logo focus in on this logo
16:19beautiful logo i don't know what that
16:21represents but i love it
16:22then again i try to not brag on the show
16:26i have the original plastic bag
16:28whoa it's amazing it's kind of like a
16:32sandwich bag that's too big for a normal
16:35anyway let's remove that oh listen to
16:40that's that's good plastic bag sound you
16:42know i'm a critic of the way that a
16:44plastic bag sounds to a condenser mic
16:46and that really held up
16:47here it is the creator the first ever
16:51big muff clone again volume on a treadle
16:55it's pointless oh what's this
16:58nick this is uh the original
17:01warranty card with the perforated seam
17:04what oh man mail it into pasadena
17:08is this an official authorized warranty
17:13no so you're telling me if i live in
17:17which i could have done in another life
17:19i take it to sound services on 4105 west
17:28important please read
17:31this unit fails to function if this unit
17:35fails to function remove bottom plate by
17:38that's why you keep the feet oh there's
17:42what like the shroud of tauren or
17:45what unbelievable should i have said
17:53somebody brings in a triangle big muff
17:56takes the circuit mods it a bit and
18:00that's it it's a big muff clone
19:00while the boss tone distortion stays in
19:02production until the early 70s when
19:04jordan finally dissolves
19:06all these other models disappear pretty
19:10low sales numbers and they're getting
19:12really hard to find so
19:13keep that in mind if you see one come up
19:16it's also worth noting that george cole
19:18and engineer bob garcia went to work for
19:22they designed some really amazing amps
19:24george also designed the famous
19:26polytone amps made famous in the jazz
19:29community he was involved in other
19:30designs because he was a good friend of
19:32leo fender there's all kinds of history
19:35there's just a ton of epic designs and
19:37ideas connected to the jordan
19:39legacy so be sure and check out mahoney
19:42the reissues that i mentioned
19:43the last one we played the buzz tone in
19:47riff section and the vico vibe thing
19:50there's a link in the description to his
19:54that said here are some really good
19:57for buzz tones in a modern facility a
20:00modern casing that you don't have to
20:02plug into the guitar
20:04the voodoo lab super fuzz is not a
20:06univox super fuzz it's kind of a
20:09strange branding wafu is wafu a turn i
20:14it's it's interesting it has nothing to
20:16do with the namesake it is a boss tone
20:18and it's one of the best there is the
20:20electro harmonic satisfaction fuzz
20:23which you would think would be a maestro
20:25fuzz tone because that's the sound of
20:26satisfaction but if your electro
20:29now let's not use the actual circuit
20:31let's use a boss tone and remove the two
20:34i don't know why i don't think they know
20:37mahoney makes a buzz tone in this
20:40and today for a limited time only
20:44there are 49 of this show exclusive
20:48red version has a slight modification
20:52they're on reverb right now there's a
20:54link below they're going to sell really
20:56fast i can't help it we're doing it
20:58because we can and we should and there's
21:02of these actually we are selling 100 of
21:06more is always better i'm going to sign
21:10and we're going to do a jam do the jam
22:21today's record time is brought to you by
22:23a greatest hits record released in 1973
22:26it is the best of spirit spirit was a
22:30california rock band
22:31uh in the late 60s tons of hits and very
22:35the guitar player randy california was
22:38known as an avid jordan
22:40boss tone user promoter and one of the
22:42reasons that this plug-in effect
22:44exploded and got very very
22:46popular there's a few songs you may have
22:48heard my personal favorite song
22:51title from this record is called fresh
22:54if you're gonna name a song something
22:56name it fresh garbage
22:57check it out it's like a mixture of the
23:01the doors blue oyster colt
23:05it's interesting i'm gonna leave it at
23:06that in the comments let me know what
23:08and there's a legend attached to the
23:12beyond his use of the boss tone in 1997
23:17on a beach in hawaii saving his son and
23:20jordan boss tone effect unit was in his
23:24he supposedly always had one on him in
23:28and even at the point of his death
23:31had it i'm sorry record time got dark
23:35but that story had to be told
23:37let's move on thanks so much for
23:39watching i hope you've really enjoyed
23:42this and this amazing
23:43story of a company that did some really
