✦
The tech industry is overwhelming due to the relentless pace of progress, pressure to continuously learn, and glorification of hustle culture.
00:00Tech projects have a relentless pace with continuous releases and no break between sprints.
There is internal and external pressure to constantly acquire new skills, leading to overwhelm.
Hustle culture, promoted by social media influencers, creates a belief that working excessively is necessary for success.
✦
Signs of being overwhelmed include constant fatigue, feeling disconnected, anxiety about job security, and the belief that more work needs to be done.
02:27Constant fatigue and lack of energy in tasks at work and home.
Feeling disconnected from personal life due to the expectation of always being available for work.
Anxiety about job security and the belief that there are always others waiting to take your job.
Managers mistakenly believe that giving more work makes everyone more productive.
✦
Signs of being overwhelmed also include having a hard time making decisions, feeling inadequate despite achievements, getting angry when asked for help, and making excuses for not engaging in social activities.
05:49Difficulty making decisions, even trivial ones, due to overwhelm.
Feeling inadequate at work despite external recognition of achievements.
Getting angry when asked for help, a sign of being overwhelmed and having too much to handle.
Making excuses for not engaging in social activities, which indicates feeling overwhelmed.
✦
To reduce overwhelm, it is important to prioritize tasks, learn to say no, practice mindfulness or prayer, exercise, get enough sleep, and take a break from social media.
13:15Prioritize tasks in both personal and work life to focus on high-priority and urgent responsibilities.
Learn to set boundaries and say no to additional work or commitments.
Practice mindfulness or prayer to give the mind rest and reduce stress.
Regular exercise and sufficient sleep can increase the body's ability to handle stress.
Taking a break from social media can help avoid comparison and reduce the pressure to achieve.
00:00 realistically on most jobs uh we have to
00:03 say no you know companies aren't going
00:04 to say well we better not give you know
00:07 Jamie too much work they're going to say
00:09 let's keep giving jimie work and he's a
00:11 professional he's an adult he'll tell us
00:13 when it's too much
00:25 work being overwhelmed in Tech is almost
00:28 a badge of honor these days and I
00:30 wouldn't blame you if you just thought
00:32 is there anything at all I can even do
00:34 about it every day the requirements
00:36 change there's some new technical hurdle
00:39 to overcome it's like building your
00:41 house on shifting sand I don't know
00:43 about you but that wipes me out and
00:46 people expect you to be available all
00:48 the time whether it's slack or online
00:51 meetings there's no time for you to
00:53 actually rest anymore and people expect
00:56 that no matter what you're doing in your
00:58 personal life you can instant inly jump
01:00 on the call or instantly respond to a
01:02 message and so you end up feeling kind
01:04 of disconnected from the people in your
01:06 personal life and social media is
01:09 bombarding you with all these new
01:11 technologies and you get this feeling in
01:13 the back of your mind this anxiety that
01:15 grows that's like if I slow down for
01:18 even a second there's hundreds of other
01:20 developers just waiting to take my job
01:23 worst of all managers have bought this
01:25 lie that giving you more work and making
01:27 you more efficient makes everybody more
01:30 productive when in reality it just
01:32 creates more chaos and burns everybody
01:35 out okay look if you're feeling
01:37 overwhelmed I don't want to add to that
01:40 by giving you more things to worry about
01:42 so let me share some things I've learned
01:44 in my career about when I've become
01:46 overwhelmed and I really hope the things
01:48 that I've learned since that have helped
01:50 me quite a bit will help you so you can
01:52 just have a really calm career and keep
01:55 growing first I'm going to share some
01:57 reasons why overwhelm is so prevalent in
02:00 the tech industry and then I'm going to
02:02 give you some signs you can look for to
02:04 help you know if you might be getting
02:06 overwhelmed with work you probably know
02:08 already but you may not and at the final
02:12 third of the video I'm going to actually
02:13 give you some really practical tips that
02:15 I hope will really help you if you are
02:18 dealing with overwhelm make some actual
02:21 changes in your life and in your career
02:23 and actually get back to Growing again
02:25 in your career so why is the tech
02:27 industry so overwhelming well the first
02:30 reason is just the Relentless pace of
02:32 progress if you're on a scrum project or
02:35 something like that every 2 weeks
02:37 there's a new release delivered but
02:40 there's no break in between the end of
02:42 that Sprint and the next one you just
02:43 roll right into it and keep marching
02:45 ahead and it's actually worse on kbon
02:48 projects because there is no rhythm to
02:50 know there's an end to anything there's
02:52 really just the end of the project and
02:53 there's an ongoing set of tickets also
02:56 many companies have an unlimited
02:58 vacation policy
03:00 and on the surface this sounds like a
03:02 really good thing oh I could take
03:03 vacation whenever I want but if you talk
03:05 to most people I think you may have even
03:07 experienced this yourself who work at
03:08 one of these companies people actually
03:11 end up taking less vacation because they
03:13 don't feel enough pressure to make sure
03:15 that they use it the second way that the
03:18 tech industry overwhelms us or may get
03:20 you to a point where you're feeling
03:22 overwhelmed is the pressure we have to
03:25 continuously learn when you're on the
03:28 job especially if you're developer just
03:31 part of getting your daily work done is
03:33 often searching all over the Internet or
03:35 using chat GPT or whatever kind of
03:37 research tools you use to find the
03:40 answers to your questions and even if
03:42 you're not a developer let's say you're
03:44 a product manager you're looking at you
03:46 know your competitors you're looking at
03:48 other products and Solutions in the
03:50 market that are similar to yours you're
03:51 looking for new opportunities you're
03:53 talking to your engineering team so
03:55 there's all these new things we're
03:57 acquiring just on the job but worse than
03:59 in that is if you go out on social media
04:02 or you go out on learning sites or you
04:04 just talk to your friends or your
04:06 colleagues there seems to be this
04:08 internal pressure that if you're not
04:10 learning new skills and you're not you
04:13 know growing that you're going to fail
04:14 in your career and while certainly you
04:17 can't just ride out a c current set of
04:19 skills probably for 20 years I think
04:23 often when we get to a point of
04:25 overwhelm in Tech it's just because we
04:27 have this unrealistic pressure to keep
04:29 learning and nobody can keep up with
04:31 that the third way that we often get
04:33 overwhelmed in the tech industry and I
04:35 think a big reason why it's such a
04:37 problem is we glorify hustle culture
04:41 look there's a lot of very well-known
04:43 social media influencers that like to
04:47 pump you up with a bunch of motivation
04:49 about how you know get out there and
04:50 keep working and you know work 80 hours
04:53 a week to achieve your dreams and I
04:55 think you know that sounds good on the
04:57 surface when some of those people want
04:59 to encourage you to basically burn your
05:02 entire life out to achieve some super
05:05 high goal but you know life is not a
05:08 Sprint it's a marathon and if you go
05:11 about your career that way where
05:13 basically you leave yourself no time for
05:15 rest you're going to get to a period of
05:17 burnout or overwhelm probably quicker
05:20 than you expect and I actually have a
05:22 career guide that you can download from
05:24 my website where I talk a little bit
05:26 about looking at your career over time
05:28 and sort of the stages that you go
05:30 through that's a much more I think
05:32 realistic way to think about achieving
05:34 you know outcomes in your career maybe
05:36 starting a company and things like that
05:38 that doesn't really require you to
05:41 basically sacrifice your health and
05:43 sacrifice your work life balance and
05:45 just burn yourself out so how do you
05:47 know that you're actually becoming
05:49 overwhelmed what happens well I think
05:52 one of the first things then and this is
05:54 probably one of the more obvious ones
05:56 but a little bit further I'm going to
05:57 get into some of the ones that are a
05:58 little harder to tell
06:00 is you constantly just feel kind of
06:02 fatigued like you don't have any energy
06:05 just doing anything your your tasks at
06:08 work things at home feel a lot more
06:10 exhausting than normal and also you can
06:13 just feel really depressed you know I've
06:16 heard the the explanation that
06:17 depression is when you're focused on the
06:19 past and anxiety is when you're focused
06:21 on the future I think that's pretty true
06:23 you know when when you're depressed
06:24 often you're looking back at something
06:27 in your life or in work that ultimately
06:29 you can't change it's really not very
06:30 helpful but you know the other day I
06:34 actually had something happen to me
06:35 where I've had three really difficult
06:38 things happen in my personal life this
06:39 year two of them were with family uh one
06:42 of them is with sort of extended family
06:45 and you know those three things on their
06:48 own I can handle a certain level of
06:51 stress on top of my job and you know
06:53 having a relationship with my wife and
06:55 my kids right there there's almost like
06:56 if you think of it like you have a
06:58 reservoir that holds water in your body
07:01 and that can hold an amount of stress or
07:03 amount of things that you can deal with
07:06 everyone has a threshold or a limit
07:08 where if you go above that you start to
07:11 feel overwhelmed and you get angry you
07:14 get depressed you know you start to feel
07:16 fatigued basically that this bullet that
07:17 I'm talking about this point I'm making
07:19 with you well the other day I was just
07:22 feeling kind of angry and I was feeling
07:24 unsettled and I couldn't figure out why
07:28 and you know I was talking about my wife
07:29 about it at night and I'm going through
07:31 all the things that I've been you know
07:32 dealing with and I realized something
07:35 had just happened recently that I won't
07:38 get into it but it wasn't a huge stress
07:40 but it was still a stress but that thing
07:44 on top of all the other things I was
07:45 dealing with this year was that was all
07:48 that was needed to kind of fill up my
07:50 reservoir so to speak of of stress and
07:52 of overwhelm and really caused me to
07:55 experience a lot of anxiety and feel
07:57 really angry and stressed out so if if
07:59 you're not sure why you're feeling
08:02 overwhelmed uh a sign can be that you
08:05 can't really figure out why and it might
08:07 not be a bad idea to look back over you
08:10 know the recent let's say year or couple
08:12 years you might have a few things going
08:14 on whether it's work or personal that
08:16 seem unrelated and they seem like
08:18 they're somewhat resolved in in my case
08:21 I felt like these were things that oh
08:22 I'm not really stressed out about them
08:24 anymore but just because they're not
08:26 currently stressing you out if they're
08:28 still somewhat stressful you know the
08:30 cumulative amount of all those things
08:32 together can really bring you to a place
08:34 of overwhelm the second sign that you're
08:37 probably overwhelmed or you may be is
08:40 you've heard the term brain fog or
08:42 basically having a hard time making
08:45 decisions uh I've shared with you
08:48 earlier on the channel that you know
08:50 I've had a lot of problems with insomnia
08:52 over the years I've had you know serious
08:54 burnout I shared that in a in a whole
08:56 episode with you a few weeks back but
08:59 but when I am not rested well enough or
09:02 when I'm overwhelmed I'll find that just
09:05 trivial decisions you know which task I
09:07 should work on first which direction to
09:09 go with the code you know what things I
09:12 should do or not do in my personal life
09:14 all of the sudden become way harder than
09:17 they really should be and my ability to
09:19 just kind of think clearly through a
09:21 sequence of processes where normally you
09:23 know I just kind of make the decisions
09:25 and things would move forward suddenly
09:27 I'll get to this place where I just
09:29 foggy I feel like I I'm confused I don't
09:32 really know where to go so if you're
09:35 starting to feel like that you know take
09:37 that seriously that's a real sign that
09:39 you might be experiencing overwhelm
09:41 another reason you might be feeling
09:43 overwhelmed or a sign of it rather is if
09:46 you basically feel
09:49 inadequate at at your job but it's kind
09:52 of contrary to your achievements meaning
09:55 you're actually getting a lot done and
09:57 you might even have co-workers
09:59 telling you hey we really love the job
10:02 you're working we really appreciate you
10:03 know this task you did or how hard you
10:06 worked on this one thing or how you
10:08 helped us you know solve this design
10:09 issue but you still are critical of
10:12 yourself and you still seem to tell
10:14 yourself man I'm just not getting enough
10:17 done and I'm not really doing really
10:18 great at this job that you know people
10:21 will attribute that to impostor syndrome
10:23 and sometimes it can be but sometimes
10:25 actually if you look into the science
10:26 behind it there's a that's a sign of
10:28 being over whelmed if you've got too
10:30 many things you're responsible for you
10:32 can suddenly become really self-critical
10:35 the fourth sign that you might be
10:37 overwhelmed is you get angry whenever
10:39 people ask for your help you've probably
10:42 seen this if you've been on a project
10:44 let's say you're a senior developer or a
10:46 junior developer and your Tech lead or
10:48 your lead you know technical lead on
10:50 your software project anytime you ask
10:53 them for help they kind of bark at you
10:56 or they basically make it your fault or
10:59 tell you well you didn't write the pr
11:01 correctly or you know I don't have time
11:03 you should know better they basically
11:05 give you these disclaimer statements
11:07 that somehow it's your problem and sure
11:09 there's processes we should follow and
11:11 we don't always do them perfectly and
11:13 sometimes you know asking for help is an
11:15 opportunity when someone can show us hey
11:17 I need you to go back and do something
11:19 different but the attitude that people
11:21 use when they tell you that if they kind
11:23 of again are short with you angry with
11:25 you bark at you that's a really good
11:27 sign that the person working with is
11:30 probably overwhelmed and they haven't
11:32 learned how to set boundaries with their
11:33 employer they're getting too much piled
11:35 on them and and they haven't figured out
11:37 a way to stop that so if you personally
11:41 start to not want to help people
11:43 especially if you see this too in your
11:45 personal life let's say your wife and
11:47 kids want to do something with you or
11:50 your friends want to do something with
11:51 you or there's a concert coming up or
11:53 some sporting event or you know whatever
11:55 it is that you like to do in your life
11:56 for fun you find reasons not to do it
12:00 you you almost get angry at the person
12:02 for asking you or at yourself for not
12:04 being able to do it that's a really good
12:06 sign that you're starting to experience
12:08 or probably are right in the middle of
12:09 some serious overwhelm in your life and
12:12 the last sign that you're probably
12:14 overwhelmed is the excuse that you're
12:16 too busy for social activities whether
12:19 it's somebody asking you to go out to
12:21 dinner with them or just go for a walk
12:24 or just trivial things that involve you
12:26 know building relationships with people
12:28 spending time together I'll often hear
12:31 people say I'm too busy I'm too busy I'm
12:33 too busy and hey if it's somebody who
12:35 you know let's say it's somebody on
12:37 linked out re linked out LinkedIn
12:39 reaching out to me for you know help
12:41 with something I literally am too busy
12:44 often to just build random new
12:45 relationships with people if they're
12:47 asking me to hop on a call which I get
12:49 all the time or you know promote their
12:51 product I'm literally too busy but the
12:53 people who are close to you in your life
12:55 and the people who you've already kind
12:56 of committed to have a relationship with
12:59 if you're always telling them I'm just
13:01 too busy I'm just too busy that's a big
13:04 sign that you're overwhelmed and you
13:06 need to do something about it so how can
13:08 you reduce overwhelm if you find
13:10 yourself in the middle of it well the
13:13 first thing that can really help is to
13:15 take a look at everything that you're
13:17 responsible for your tasks both in your
13:20 personal life and at work and prioritize
13:23 them this is the same thing that we ask
13:26 product managers to do for example with
13:28 you know work they give a scrum team or
13:30 tickets they give a you know conon team
13:33 but it it it surprises me that as
13:35 developers we often think just getting
13:37 handed tickets is enough prioritization
13:40 in our life and usually we've got things
13:41 we're responsible for at work other than
13:44 just user stories or tickets we've got
13:46 people that we need to be mentoring
13:48 people we need to help we may have some
13:50 administrative task like filing an
13:52 expense report or something we have to
13:53 do we may have some things at home that
13:56 we're responsible for a whole bunch of
13:58 I've got all kinds of stuff around here
13:59 projects that I'm responsible for and
14:02 some of those things are high priority
14:04 and some of them are not and some of
14:06 them seem urgent but they're not uh you
14:10 may have heard of the book SE The Seven
14:12 Habits of Highly Effective People by
14:14 Steven covy it's a really famous book it
14:17 I it's it was written a long time ago
14:18 now but that has a really great
14:20 framework for thinking through all the
14:22 tasks in your life and and in work and
14:25 trying to figure out you know how should
14:27 you prioritize them based on
14:29 a a few pretty simple factors but you
14:32 know one of the things I would often do
14:33 in my life and I've been honest with you
14:35 about this on the channel is when I
14:37 didn't want to prioritize my work I
14:39 would do drugs I would smoke weed
14:41 basically because I was just so
14:43 overwhelmed I didn't even feel like I
14:45 knew where to start to prioritize and so
14:48 rather than doing almost anything I
14:50 would do sort of like the bare minimum
14:52 in my personal life and I would throw so
14:53 much into work I've talked with you
14:55 about this before you know instead of
14:57 learning how to prioritize I would just
14:59 get high and then just kind of you know
15:01 Escape play a video game play some music
15:03 hang out with my wife or my kids and
15:06 just completely you know basically
15:08 ignore and and blow off stuff that I was
15:11 responsible for so you know if you are
15:13 feeling overwhelmed I just really want
15:15 to encourage you find a way that works
15:17 for you there's tons of different ways
15:19 to prioritize tasks but again the book I
15:21 just mentioned is really helpful and
15:23 don't you know Escape you know if you're
15:25 drinking if you're smoking if you're
15:26 doing anything else like that that's
15:28 that's really an escape that's allowing
15:30 you to put off what you need to do
15:32 you're going to continue to feel
15:33 overwhelmed until you start chipping
15:36 away at it and getting some of those
15:37 things out of the way the second way you
15:39 can reduce overwhelm is to learn to say
15:42 no this is a really hard one for me I've
15:46 shared this with you many times on the
15:48 channel but you know when you come from
15:50 a family let's say where you have really
15:52 high expectations on you as a kid
15:54 growing up it can be really hard to
15:56 learn you know as an adult in your
15:58 personal life and in your professional
15:59 life to really just say no to people
16:02 when it's a reasonable time to do it and
16:05 so you know if you're struggling with
16:07 saying no and people ask a lot of you
16:09 and you tend to just agree to stuff even
16:11 though you don't really probably have
16:13 the time or energy or you don't really
16:15 want to do it um there's a book now this
16:18 is probably only going to be helpful if
16:19 you believe in God but uh if you don't
16:23 don't read it or read a different book
16:25 but the one that really helped me was uh
16:27 there's a book called when people are
16:29 big and God is small and this book
16:32 really helped me kind of put in
16:34 perspective how much I was moving
16:36 forward in my life basing a lot of my
16:38 own personal value of myself and and how
16:42 successful I thought I was and sort of
16:44 what I thought I should be doing as a
16:45 person on you know what other people
16:48 expected of me when realistically on
16:50 most jobs uh we have to say no you know
16:53 companies aren't going to say well we
16:55 better not give you know jimie too much
16:57 work they're going to say
16:59 let's keep giving Jamie work and he's a
17:01 professional he's an adult he'll tell us
17:03 when it's too much work so you know
17:07 basically if anything you can do to try
17:09 to help your ability to set boundaries
17:12 with people and I'm going to make
17:13 specific videos in the next year about
17:15 setting boundaries will really help you
17:18 not feel overwhelmed the third thing you
17:20 can do to help just reduce or eliminate
17:23 your feeling of just being overwhelmed
17:25 in your life or on your projects is to
17:28 PR practice mindfulness or prayer you
17:32 know in today's modern age often we get
17:35 up in the morning we get on our cell
17:37 phone right away we get on slack we get
17:40 into a meeting we work all day we're
17:42 focused on the computer then we come
17:44 home maybe we play a video game we watch
17:47 TV we watch a YouTube video like this
17:50 you know we're constantly taking an
17:52 information and looking at screens and
17:54 accomplishing things and it gives us no
17:57 time at all to let let our thoughts
17:59 actually sort of be processed and settle
18:02 and you know when I had a lot of
18:03 problems with sleep my insomnia which I
18:05 still do struggle with on and off for
18:07 sure you know one of the things that
18:09 helped me was I I came up with a period
18:11 of worry time now this isn't something I
18:14 came up with personally I'll I'll do a
18:16 whole episode on sleep this year by the
18:18 way and share some of the things I've
18:19 learned about it but you know I if you
18:22 if you don't give yourself some time to
18:24 really process everything that's going
18:26 on your day where you're not taking on
18:28 new information it's just going to
18:30 continue to overwhelm you so I'd really
18:31 encourage you there's some there's some
18:33 mindfulness apps out there that'll help
18:35 you with you know if you if you want to
18:37 do meditation also just you know if you
18:39 don't want to look at it as sort of a
18:41 new age type of thing and just look at
18:43 it as an ability for you to be able to
18:45 give your mind rest and not be thinking
18:48 about anything uh you know and I'll warn
18:50 you if you haven't done this in a number
18:52 of years you got to be patient with
18:54 yourself it's extremely hard you might
18:56 be able to only sit with your own
18:58 thoughts for like 2 minutes seriously
19:01 when you first start doing this you know
19:03 me being uh of of religious Faith you
19:06 know I I follow Christ um prayer is is
19:09 what I almost always go to when I'm
19:12 stressed out and I need to let my
19:13 thoughts relax um I bring my stresses to
19:17 the Lord and and I ask for help with him
19:20 and sometimes I just sit there in you
19:22 know the piece of that he's in control
19:24 and try to just let go of like you know
19:27 I I can't get this all done I'm feeling
19:29 overwhelmed but I'm not the one in
19:31 control and that often really helps me
19:33 out the fourth thing you can do to
19:35 really help yourself recover from
19:37 overwhelm or or deal with it better is
19:40 to exercise and get more sleep you know
19:43 when you're not sleeping well it's
19:45 incredibly hard to exercise I've been
19:47 struggling for the last 6 years I used
19:50 to be significantly uh lighter than I am
19:54 right now um and I used to work out you
19:57 know 7 days a week and lately ever since
19:59 I had my kind of nervous breakdown
20:02 chronic insomnia this you know I talked
20:03 about this in my burnout video but this
20:05 was about 6 years ago you know I I go
20:07 through periods where I start riding my
20:09 bike a lot where I start lifting weights
20:11 again and then I have stuff happen in my
20:13 life sometimes I I just can't cope with
20:16 the stress well enough and I start to
20:18 sleep poorly and then it's really hard
20:20 to exercise and it's kind of this
20:21 vicious cycle that you get into and it's
20:24 been improving but for me it's kind of
20:26 like I improve a little and I fall back
20:27 a little and I improve a little and I
20:29 fall back a little and it's just a
20:31 process you know and I'm getting older
20:32 too and it's a lot harder to stay
20:34 healthy the older you get but if you're
20:37 feeling overwhelmed like there's just
20:38 you can't take on all the stresses of
20:40 the world one way to increase that
20:43 Reservoir I talked about that sort of
20:45 like if you think of it again as
20:46 something that holds your ability to
20:48 sort of like buffer or handle stress
20:50 before it overwhelms you is exercise you
20:54 know I like to ride road bikes there's a
20:57 little Trail called the the valway here
20:58 in Austin very close to my house uh I
21:01 also don't mind just even going for a
21:03 walk is is excellent ability to get some
21:05 exercise you don't have to power walk it
21:07 just any kind of walking but really
21:10 anything you could do lifting weights is
21:11 great as you get older just really all
21:13 the time but you know what I found is
21:15 that that Reservoir that ability to take
21:17 on stress you probably experienced this
21:19 too increases if you're exercising
21:21 regularly meaning you can have stressful
21:24 events happen in your life or happen at
21:26 work and they won't kind of blow you out
21:29 into anxiety or depression or despair as
21:32 quickly because you have sort of a
21:34 buffer of you know your body feels
21:37 really good from the workout you have
21:39 you know a lot of uh things going
21:41 through your body hormones and things
21:43 that are keeping sort of your stress at
21:44 a more balanced level so that when you
21:47 do hit those stress periods you don't
21:49 just instantly flip out and the last
21:51 thing I'd really recommend you consider
21:54 if you want to reduce overwhelm in your
21:56 life and this is something something
21:58 that is super hard for most people but
22:01 I've done it several times over the last
22:03 6 years and it's been really
22:05 lifechanging is to take what's called a
22:07 social media fast it's basically a break
22:11 explicit break from all social media for
22:14 a period of time now I should clarify
22:17 here I don't personally look at
22:19 listening to podcasts or watching
22:21 YouTube videos necessarily is social
22:24 media I more think of you know Instagram
22:26 Tik Tok Twitter
22:28 you know WhatsApp all that kind of stuff
22:30 is Facebook right as as social media but
22:34 the the the main thing here is you know
22:37 the the more you're on social media or
22:39 really you're just consuming content
22:40 you're seeing all these other people in
22:42 life doing things and if you've got
22:45 goals in your life whether it's just
22:47 your work you know for another company
22:49 or you're trying to start a company like
22:51 I am you know when I go on LinkedIn
22:54 let's say and I scroll two or three
22:57 times you know I start thinking should I
22:58 have sold three companies by the time I
23:00 was 23 you know or whatever you know
23:03 achievement signaling people are sharing
23:05 and and then all of the sudden rather
23:07 than me being excited about my life and
23:09 wanting to move forward and just proud
23:11 of my own achievements I'm getting
23:12 wrapped up in everybody else's and then
23:15 the other thing is you know learning
23:17 you've you've heard me talk about this I
23:18 think a couple years ago but learning
23:20 can be a form of procrastination I
23:22 learned this the hard way which is you
23:23 know you can you can be basically on
23:26 YouTube watching videos about some
23:28 programming thing or about you know
23:30 starting a business or health but if
23:32 you're not actually starting a business
23:34 and taking actions in it or you're not
23:36 actually using the program programming
23:38 language or you're not actually starting
23:40 to exercise you're not really doing
23:44 anything different in your life but
23:45 you're getting kind of that same
23:46 endorphin hit in your body you know that
23:49 you that you or dopamine sorry hit that
23:51 you think that you know you're basically
23:54 creating a reward for yourself that
23:55 you're accomplishing something and
23:56 you're not you're deceiving yourself so
23:59 you know I would recommend you can do it
24:01 for a week you can do it for a month my
24:03 wife did it for almost a whole year uh
24:06 but you know just uninstall the social
24:08 media apps off of your phone take a
24:10 freaking break you know just focus on
24:13 the stuff right in front of you and then
24:16 come back to it if you're feeling less
24:18 overwhelmed and you know I hope that
24:20 just if you try at least one or
24:22 hopefully a lot of these five tips I
24:24 gave you today if you're starting to
24:25 feel really overwhelmed and some of the
24:28 signs that I've given you are helping
24:29 you see that you are overwhelmed uh you
24:31 can pull yourself out of it and just
24:34 enjoy your career this year so are you
24:36 struggling with being overwhelmed what
24:38 are you going through what are you doing
24:40 to get help leave me some comments until
24:43 next time thanks
