00:14perspective like what what kinds of

00:16things can designers do to try and like

00:19build this genuine relationship it's a

00:21great question so you can do a couple

00:23things so one I think that if you err on

00:28the side of creating tools utilities

00:32you're gonna be in a good spot you can

00:34count on it because you can also trick

00:35yourself a way that you can't trick

00:36yourself is a tool so like Google Maps

00:39is a tool Google Maps isn't saying like

00:41do you want to like rate your cab ride

00:43here it's like no thank you for getting

00:45me here on time Google Maps and I don't

00:47need to talk to you anymore I'll talk to

00:48you later

00:48and I think those things they pop up

00:50they can bring us together and they can

00:52be valuable utilities we think about

00:54timeless tools so things that have been

00:56around forever

00:57calendars lists Maps things like that

01:00those are things that can be very

01:02actually quite personal they can be

01:04social they can be fun but if you just

01:06treat those things as like your

01:07foundation you're not inventing a new

01:09need like if you're inventing a new need

01:11I think maybe you're part of the problem

01:13I'm also interested in a PC wrote about

01:16the fact that it's an important time for

01:18design finally people are recognizing

01:21and it's like a very integrated piece of

01:22a product but you also said something

01:25that really stood out to me in that

01:26piece which is you worry that design is

01:29being set up to fail hmm what do you

01:31mean by that

01:31so what I mean by that is I'm a business

01:35guy and so I hear I hang out with a lot

01:37of business type people I hear business

01:39type chatter and I saw a lot of

01:41attention on design and it became

01:43something that VCS were talking about

01:45business leaders but you gotta have it

01:47you gotta get yourself some design get a

01:49guy who looks like Yves Behar bring them

01:51in

01:51have them put some sticky notes up and

01:53all that kind of stuff and so I can tell

01:54you designer after designer after

01:56designer who would be designer number

01:57one at a startup that really made a lot

02:00of its headway early on because of

02:02design and that person maybe got like

02:040.2% of the company that then got sold

02:06for 30 million it's like you did it and

02:08somebody else made thirty million

02:09dollars I want you to at least make one

02:11billion

02:12be nice that's why I always felt like

02:14designers or taking advantage of and

02:17what in a way that engineers weren't so

02:19I thought here's a moment for you to

02:21like go for it

02:22but I think what happened more is

02:25because design is more accessible than

02:27engineering I can't go pretend to set up

02:29a server like I just didn't set up a

02:31server because of that I think business

02:33people just grabbed a design so I don't

02:36actually think it worked

02:37designed the word is now everywhere good

02:40job the word design but designers the

02:42community I don't think they're getting

02:44much from it and I don't think that

02:45those of us on the receiving end of

02:48designed products are also getting much

02:51from it because those people didn't

02:53actually get to the position that they

02:54want so the sending up to fail of the e

03:00believe that that happened yes

03:01absolutely just in terms of the upper

03:04bounds of what designers could wear

03:07where designers could be in the

03:09organizational chart and the influence

03:12that they could have had on society so

03:14essentially there's this idea that

03:17design is important but you know the

03:19actual recognition that whether you

03:22acknowledge it or not design is

03:24foundational and present everywhere has

03:26not been made well design is objectively

03:28important but what design is has not

03:31been internalized design is not

03:33decoration its foundation it's not the

03:35it's not the molding on the building

03:37it's the underlying architecture it's

03:39the blueprints down that's when you're

03:41really doing design and that is from the

03:43beginning
