00:00what do you think right now is the
00:01fastest way to get to your first
00:03$100,000 by not liking the word to
00:06actually answer you literally the
00:08fastest way to get there is attention is
00:11the number one asset hi nice to meet you
00:14what's the one thing that if you had
00:16learned it at 25 it would have
00:17accelerated your success trajectory so
00:20much more that cander was a good thing
00:22not a bad thing and I didn't really know
00:24what the word cander meant at the time
00:26but when I look back at my career at
00:29this point it's very clear to me that
00:30that is the you know that that was the
00:33Kryptonite that things were going super
00:36well and things went well and things are
00:38well but the one place where I could
00:40have really taken it to the next level
00:42would have been when I look back at my
00:44career all of the professional
00:45relationships that could be better today
00:47and I really believe in relationships
00:50were predominantly employees
00:52occasionally partners and vendors where
00:55I wasn't capable of delivering bad news
00:57out of actually loving them and liking
01:00them and that then led to muckery
01:03resentment on my end sloppy exits and
01:06firings or partnership breakups and so
01:09over the last three four years I think
01:11I've been able to up my cander game
01:13dramatically by reframing it as kind
01:16cander and that's really worked for me
01:18I'm still probably a five out of 10
01:20which is not really great but boy going
01:24from a 1 out of 10 or a two out of 10 to
01:26a five or six out of 10 has been a
01:28Monster jump and I feel the effects and
01:31that is definitely the black and white
01:32answer to if I could do it at 25
01:35differently what's the lack of cander
01:37you had at 25 and then now if someone is
01:39underperforming at your company what
01:41kind of cander do you have with them I'm
01:43just able to have the conversation you
01:45know hey Johnny can I get 15 minutes
01:47with you Hey listen brother I love you
01:49you're a good dude you do a lot of
01:50things right but this and this that
01:51you're not doing well it's so
01:54detrimental that it might lead to us not
01:56being able to work together so can we
01:57work on it and here's how I can help and
02:00here's how you can help that combo just
02:03didn't happen before you know it would
02:04come out and like I'd walk by Johnny and
02:07be like hey Johnny like you know get
02:09your game up brother haha like you know
02:10I would do these little things and ra if
02:12I was close to you I would Raz you like
02:15I would try to communicate through like
02:16a joke or a Raz that was heavily you
02:20know dipped in honey and sugar so it
02:23wouldn't hurt I was just being around
02:25the bush and so now it's like what does
02:27it look like even having the combo just
02:30having it and the reason I'm 5 out of 10
02:31is even when I'm having them now I got
02:33to really like get there to like be like
02:35no no you got to shoot it straight cuz
02:37it's in me to be around the bush in that
02:39scenario and I'm really really
02:41practicing on going right at it and it's
02:42really been helpful do you believe in
02:45hire slowly fire quickly or do you give
02:48people more shots I'm the reverse
02:51actually I'm a big believer in hiring
02:53fast I think people overthink it it's a
02:54guessing game like resumés are loaded
02:57people's I don't think I've ever checked
02:59check the reference check it's not
03:01practical it's not common sense of
03:03course you're going to put the three
03:04people that either most believe in you
03:05or love you Andor you prep them to be
03:07like hey get my back um so I think
03:11you're making an intuitive guess I think
03:12you're making a logical guess to the
03:14best of your ability based on what you
03:15know about your organization and the
03:17series of questions you asked I'm a big
03:19fan of hiring fast meaning I don't think
03:21you should just hire everyone but if you
03:23feel it you don't need to go through too
03:25many more rounds it all depends on how
03:28much you trust your intuition and
03:30I think once you have someone in your
03:33organization you now know the truth
03:35hiring is guessing firing is knowing to
03:38me it's higher fast fire faster and I'll
03:41explain that in a minute that doesn't
03:42mean like be mean and fire it means put
03:44in the work quickly if you can recognize
03:46something's not working and if it
03:47doesn't work after six months to a year
03:49like you got to go and make that move
03:51and make sure you don't surprise the
03:52person that's what I've had to work on
03:54and then my big one is promote fastest
03:57which is like if you know you have a
03:58superstar don't wait well you told them
04:01you're going to revisit their salary in
04:02two years if you know somebody's
04:04remarkable in four months and you can
04:05afford it consider showing them that you
04:08want to be with them long term by
04:10promoting a little bit faster how do you
04:11spot those superstars on your team it
04:13all depends on who you are as a boss for
04:15me I'm so in the dirt like I'm in my
04:18business so for me I don't know I just
04:20see it like if you're doing your craft
04:22you see it plus for me I came up the
04:24game in a way where I've done all the
04:26jobs that people are doing so I know how
04:28to judge it which is huge in the wine
04:31and liquor store business and the same
04:32in this marketing agency like it's just
04:34easy for me to see it because I've done
04:35it I think one there's that two if
04:39you're in an ivory Tower if you've got a
04:41global organization and you can't see
04:43everybody and maybe you aren't even
04:44someone who's done all the crafts you
04:45came up to CFO ranks or something else
04:48that's where you need to rely on people
04:50you trust I always tell leaders judge
04:51the judgers I think too many leaders
04:53blindly take the feedback of their
04:55direct reports without realizing
04:57sometimes their direct reports are
04:58undermining people underneath them cuz
05:00they themselves don't want to lose their
05:02spot but if you can judge the judgers
05:04and have a good feel on that you can
05:05figure out who you need to trust and
05:07those people's words should carry a lot
05:09of weight even as in it as I am there
05:12are 30 people in bayner X Out of 2000
05:14whose words carry a lot of weight and
05:16have the capacity and the ability to
05:17change my mind on someone I'll double
05:19click into it after they're like I'm
05:21like does Sally stink and they can tell
05:23a masking if Sally I think Sally stinks
05:26and then if two of them are like no no
05:27Sally's remarkable I'm like huh and then
05:29I'll double click I'll spend more time
05:30in Sally I'll watch Sally's work more
05:32it's pretty cool getting from one to 100
05:35employees is very different from 100 to
05:37a th000 a th000 to 2,000 what has had to
05:39shift about you to get to that growth
05:42well a couple things you have to let go
05:44you know I hired everybody in the first
05:46like there wasn't a single person we
05:47hired that I didn't interview in the
05:49first 100 I don't think I've interviewed
05:50anybody in the last 500 outside of two
05:53or three or four SE Suite direct reports
05:55so you've got to rely on the good work
05:57at 100 to get you to 1,000 meaning too
06:00many people listening are looking to
06:02flip their business so let's make this
06:04work for everyone if you're flipping
06:05your business you're playing a different
06:07game you're trying to maximize profit
06:09you don't care what the company looks
06:10like in 20 years if you're going more
06:12family business or Evergreen like I am
06:14everything's about the first 100
06:16employees the reason I had to hire
06:18everyone is cuz I knew that I needed 39
06:21of those 100 to get me to a th000 back
06:24to the prior question of who carries
06:25weight with me right I needed them to
06:27know my religion meaning like do I most
06:30believe in you know and all those things
06:32and that's why we've been able to get
06:33here it's the foundation of that first
06:35100 the fact that we have 20 30 40 50
06:37from that first 100 or even 10 but 50
06:40from the first 200 50 300 that's the
06:43game and so you know I think that's the
06:45point can you be remarkable in your
06:47first 100 which means you're over
06:50spending your time on HR you know you're
06:54really building a family I know a lot of
06:55people look to you to learn how to make
06:58money online and build these business
06:59businesses what do you think right now
07:01is the fastest way to get to your first
07:03$100,000 by not liking the word
07:06fast I'm really scared of that word I
07:09think fast is dangerous and I think it's
07:11a big part of my content it's why I talk
07:13about patience it's why I talk about
07:15self-awareness the reality is to
07:17actually answer you literally the
07:19fastest way to get there is through
07:22self-awareness understanding what you're
07:24actually good at you know you know like
07:26what are you good at you might be good
07:27at sales you might be good at operations
07:29you might be good at knowing everything
07:31about the Marvel Universe and that is
07:33actually your gateway to get there
07:35fastest cuz it's through content or
07:36flipping stuff on eBay and stuff of that
07:39nature so I think people try to chase
07:41Trends real estate crypto cannabis AI
07:46they're just constantly looking at these
07:48Trends because they see them as things
07:50that will get them there fast and I
07:53actually think that those are the things
07:54that are most guaranteed to not get you
07:56there so I think if we can get the word
07:59word fastest out of everyone's mouth
08:01especially under 30 and get the word
08:04happiest and most likely in there so ask
08:08that question again by replacing fastest
08:10with happiest and most likely go ahead
08:13let's do that what do you think is the
08:15most likely way to get to $100,000 in
08:17the happiest way is like what is the
08:20question I'm most passionate about you
08:22know and then that answer becomes super
08:24unique you know of of course there's
08:26macro things if you like selling
08:29understanding e-commerce and social
08:30media is going to really help obviously
08:32if you really know how to use Shopify
08:34and you really know how to make Tik toks
08:35and Instagram and YouTube shorts there's
08:38a real path to 100,000 selling almost
08:40anything this is why I'm big on passions
08:42and hobbies I believe almost every
08:45passion hobby I always use Dustin and
08:47his BMX passion or me and wrestling or
08:50the New York Jets or hip-hop music or
08:54drawing or meditation or eating clean
08:58and healthy like there's so many ways to
09:00get to 100,000 by being a Creator by
09:03sharing in Revenue with the platforms by
09:05selling T-shirts about what you do about
09:07selling tickets to a live event like in
09:09two years working hard making content
09:12and I mean really making content
09:14multiple posts a day across all the
09:16platforms around your favorite Passion
09:19Wine I did that um in 2006 when it was
09:22hard and it can be very narrow I mean I
09:25really do believe in two or three years
09:28you can make $100,000 a year just
09:30talking about Ohio State football
09:32because your podcast and your content is
09:34a top 10 because you really knew it and
09:36loved it and you were good at it and so
09:38I always push people towards that
09:40because it will be the happiest way if
09:42you're in love with snow globes making
09:44$100,000 a year selling snow globes
09:47versus making $130,000 a year being a
09:49real estate agent the path to that in
09:52the same three-year window was extremely
09:54joyful in snow globe land and probably
09:58stressful in real estate land but your
10:00friends told you that's the way you can
10:02make a 100,000 because real estate is a
10:03really good business right and so I
10:06think about this a lot and I think the
10:08word fastest is the danger because I
10:11think fastest leads us to doing things
10:13we don't love it leads us to doing
10:15things cuz we love the idea of making
10:18money to do the things we love think
10:20about that you have somebody in that
10:21scenario who wants to be a real estate
10:23agent so she can afford a trip to the
10:26National snow globe conference and
10:28Convention and do it bougie she's tired
10:31driving for 9 hours to it and staying at
10:33the Holiday Inn she wants to fly first
10:35class and stay at the Four Seasons at
10:37the national snow globe convention and
10:40that is one of the reasons that she
10:42decided to be a real estate agent versus
10:44understanding what I'm saying which is
10:46start the snow globe podcast make tons
10:48of snow globe content realize that
10:50there's millions of people that collect
10:51snow globes start an affiliate eBay
10:53business make t-shirts get sponsors from
10:56the top 10 snow globe companies by
10:58emailing them into telling them a year
10:59in that you actually have an audience
11:01these are things that excite me more
11:02what do you see as the Trends on social
11:04media right now the biggest
11:05opportunities there are out there by
11:07becoming a better practitioner and
11:10here's what I mean by that the days of
11:12just posting aimlessly a video or
11:15picture are getting harder to win
11:16because everyone's doing it and it's
11:17supply and demand so now understanding
11:20the science behind the art what's the
11:22thumbnail look like what's your copy
11:24look like what time do you post how does
11:26Tik Tok work differently than Instagram
11:29I'm working on a new book called day
11:30trading attention and it goes very deep
11:33into this it's a 301 to my book that
11:36really helped a lot of people in so show
11:37called jab jab jab right hook I would
11:39call this like an PhD to that High
11:43School course and I'm excited about it
11:45and what it really opened my eyes to
11:47which was in my conscious and
11:49subconscious but as I'm going through
11:50this six-month period working with ROV
11:53who's helping me write it it's just so
11:55clear how hard it is to be great at
11:56Social in 2024 and to be great you've
11:59got to really know your craft you got to
12:02be better and so the trend is being
12:04better like really understanding should
12:06you post a real or should post a
12:08carousel posted something the other day
12:10and got immediate feedback that it was
12:12working from somebody live and sat this
12:14Saturday so last Friday or Thursday I
12:16posted a post that said hey have you
12:18been noticing that I on Instagram I'm
12:20posting a two poost Carousel where the
12:23first one is a meme and the second one
12:24is the video clip that you were
12:26accustomed to seeing me just post I'm
12:28not doing that for my health I'm doing
12:30that because I've observed that it's
12:32working you should consider this too
12:34sure enough I think the real Tarzan that
12:37influencer I saw him on Saturday in Utah
12:39at a conference and he came up to me
12:40he's like bro you're [Â __Â ] genius
12:42thank you like I the first post I did
12:45with that tactic I did a lot better than
12:47I've been doing last month thank you and
12:49that's the ultimate for me when I do
12:51content that someone else takes it and
12:52runs and that's why I'm doing this
12:54podcast I'm hoping someone becomes the
12:56snow globe podcaster and emails me and
12:58for years that that thank you card
13:01whether in DM email or in person is like
13:04the most delicious feeling for me
13:06professionally right now so that's why I
13:08continue to do this work anyway
13:10nonetheless I think the biggest tactic
13:12is to actually realize there's science
13:15there's strategy and this isn't just
13:17being pretty or funny or like just
13:20gimmicky anymore like you've got to get
13:22great at it and so we call it at vorx
13:24sock strategic organic content MH
13:29strategic why I want everybody right now
13:32to ask themselves why they posted the
13:35last or the next post and most of it is
13:38grounded in their subconscious that
13:40something like this used to work and I
13:42want it to work in the algorithm that's
13:43not good enough anymore and this whole
13:46philosophy is grounded in something we
13:47call pack platforms and culture so
13:50really understanding the platforms how
13:52YouTube shorts works but then also
13:55understanding culture like why are
13:56corduroy hats in why did sexy red work
13:59you know why why why why why why is
14:03everyone infatuated with Taylor Swift
14:05and Kelsey right it's not just two
14:06celebrities getting together it's a
14:08little bit of like that All-American
14:10kind of like you know football player
14:12and the cheerleader pop you know what I
14:13mean like understanding the deeper
14:16meaning and understanding what that
14:17means to you and understanding is there
14:18anything for you to do about it that's
14:20what I spend my time on I had never
14:21heard of Kelsey until last week correct
14:24and so the question becomes like what is
14:25that like you know is that true love is
14:27that pop culture your strategy is that
14:30you know for me what that learning is
14:31for everyone is forget about the gossip
14:34of it all cuz that always gets buckery
14:35and I always I always feel bad for you
14:38know people that have a relationship in
14:39the public eye because that's incredibly
14:41challenging whether they choose to do it
14:43or not I still have a lot of empathy
14:45towards that what I think is let's take
14:47that down to somebody who's a mechanic
14:49right now listening the [Â __Â ] does Taylor
14:51Swift and Kelsey have to do with me
14:53here's what it has to do with you Donnie
14:54the mechanic what you just said this
14:57morning I see how many people now follow
14:58Kelsey that did a week ago those are
15:00people that didn't know who that was on
15:02the flip side for Taylor there's a lot
15:04of football fans who now know her a
15:07little more cuz she had more awareness
15:09right well for Donnie the mechanic that
15:11might mean in his local Town in Detroit
15:14he may want to go do a
15:16collaboration with a Thai
15:18restaurant where maybe they do something
15:21silly together where they cook a meal at
15:23the auto shop and in return he gives
15:26everyone a free meal at that restaurant
15:28if they use a tuneup with him for a
15:30month because the bigger thing in the
15:32Kelsey Taylor Swift thing from a small
15:34business standpoint was
15:36cross-pollinating audiences that have no
15:38crossover leads to more
15:40business I know what I just did there
15:42for 3 minutes is not how most people
15:45think I also know that that's why I've
15:47had professional business marketing
15:49success it's what I try to bring as a
15:52value prop to the audience that excites
15:54me that's a different level of thinking
15:56and that's what I'm trying to get the
15:57world into thinking more strategically
15:59than just throwing against the wall and
16:02see what sticks nothing about my career
16:05is by accident of course there's
16:08Serendipity but I think a lot and I act
16:12on thoughts a lot and I test and try a
16:15lot many of the things I do don't show
16:18up in a podcast like this there were
16:21many meme SL video two post Carousel
16:24efforts that me and the team do all the
16:25time they don't all work but
16:29what's exciting is I don't have fear in
16:31trying and I think most people listening
16:33get caught in the same routines and have
16:37too much fear of trying new things
16:40because they're scared of micro losing
16:42and what I'm trying to do is get people
16:44in business in entrepreneurship and most
16:46of all in life to stop fearing as much
16:48because too many are living their entire
16:50lives on the currency of fear what do
16:53you think is the worst strategic
16:56decision that you've made obviously
16:58you've made a lot of of good ones to
16:59stay relevant for so many years there's
17:01so many I didn't invest in Uber twice
17:03when it was my best bud and like it was
17:06because I was a little cash strapped and
17:08I valued short-term cash over long-term
17:10opportunity that probably cost me
17:13anywhere between 250 600 million which
17:16is more money than I have right now so
17:17that was huge when Steven Ross bought a
17:19piece of Vayner X he offered me a piece
17:21of the Dolphins instead of money I
17:24emotionally said no because I love the
17:26Jets too much that was obnoxiously bad
17:29um I switched from YouTube to something
17:31called vidler early in my career because
17:34I like the tagging system of vidler that
17:36probably left me not being able to build
17:3910 times bigger audience on YouTube I
17:432006 before anybody was there and I
17:46really really missed that moment I was
17:48right and then I was wrong um I mean I
17:52could literally give you another hundred
17:54examples of these are big ones these are
17:56Big so I'm on vac ation just thinking
18:00cuz that's what I do when I'm laying in
18:01the sun doing nothing I can't help it
18:03and I'm like you know what [Â __Â ]
18:04Netflix is going to be huge so I never
18:07buy stock so like it was like even weird
18:10for me to reach out to like my financial
18:11adviser I'm like I want to buy stock
18:13because usually if I have stock it's
18:14because I invested in the company early
18:16and called my investment team and said I
18:20you know I'd like to put some of my cash
18:22into Netflix stock as we're talking
18:24through the like we're kind of in the
18:25middle details the Wi-Fi was bad and it
18:29I call back and it doesn't work you know
18:30beep beep beep like I don't have this
18:31I'm trying to walk around for a minute
18:33or two and I can't get the service I'm
18:36like you know what [Â __Â ] it I'll I'll you
18:38know I got back I walked all the way
18:39back to my seat texted my team and said
18:42we'll get to this when I get back from
18:43vacation never do it I mean the number I
18:47said I wanted to put I mean seven Hefty
18:50seven figures of return I was that right
18:53early I've got too many and anybody I
18:57think who's Fair ly successful in
18:59business has too many too because it was
19:01all those decisions that got them there
19:03which means there was a lot of other
19:04decisions they either got horribly wrong
19:06or missed out on opportunity not to
19:08mention the way I actually think about
19:10life is it's the meetings and
19:13opportunities that you don't even know
19:14that you missed last night there was a
19:16dinner with a bunch of leaders of
19:18agencies that at the last minute for
19:20family reasons I canceled that could
19:22have been the meeting that changed the
19:23course of my career so I just listed
19:25four or five good ones I promise you the
19:2710 top biggest mistakes I've ever made
19:30were things I didn't show up for or
19:31didn't say yes to that would have led to
19:34remarkable opportunity that I have no
19:36idea even happened I think once you get
19:38to that place mentally and realize
19:40you're constantly making mistakes and
19:41you're okay with it it actually
19:43liberates you to enjoy this process more
19:46and I think too many people struggle
19:48with that what's on the flip side what's
19:51been your most profitable investment I
19:53mean Facebook and Twitter as Investments
19:59but the biggest Investments I'll ever
20:00have is the ones I put my own time and
20:02effort into bner X and things of that
20:04nature but there's been many great
20:07Investments I've made in my portfolio
20:09and they all take on to give you a
20:11little bit more value for the audience
20:12let me tell you what I've now realize 25
20:15years in that I look for I have to love
20:18the idea and the person and every time
20:20I've either loved just the idea or just
20:23the person and made a investment I've
20:25lost so I think if you're doing early
20:28stage investing in someone's company or
20:29an internet company or even like a local
20:31Baker like I'm starting to think about
20:32investing in small businesses more cuz
20:34I'm starting to notice what works and so
20:37like if I go look at a young lady or a
20:40young man who has like a bakery or like
20:43a tea shop or like a healthy clean food
20:46store or a t-shirt shop or bike shop I'm
20:49starting to think more about like could
20:50this be the next Starbucks could this be
20:52the next Toys R Us us when I look for
20:54that I know now that I'm looking for I
20:56like idea and the person and I've made
20:58too many mistakes with picking only one
21:00so I have to be two for two now and uh
21:02that's what I recommend everybody who's
21:04looking if somebody's asking you to
21:05invest and you've got a couple dollars
21:06to invest in something even if it's like
21:08a local dentist who wants to open up
21:09another office like believe in dentistry
21:12and believe in Ronnie or Sarah the
21:14dentist my sister's a dentist if you
21:16want to invest I love it I love that I
21:20analogy how do you think about growing
21:22your money are you allocating certain
21:24percentages to certain things or yeah as
21:27you know recently last 5 years I've
21:28gotten to a place where I have a money
21:30management team and they're pushing me
21:33I'm still way too entrepreneurial I'm
21:34not maximizing my money I would still
21:37rather Gamble and it's really not
21:39gambling I'd rather I'm just saying that
21:41because I want everybody to understand
21:42what I'm actually doing I'd rather
21:45entrepreneur than invest I'd rather lose
21:48my money going for a home run than make
21:527% on my money and have it sit there and
21:55that's because I'm trying to maximize
21:57Joy not money I'm going to leave more
22:00than enough money for my grandchildren
22:01let alone my children right so I'm not
22:04here trying to maximize my money I'm
22:06trying to maximize my joy I've worked
22:08really hard for a really long time and
22:11I've really done right by my dad and my
22:13brother and many others and you know at
22:15this point in my life I'd like to enjoy
22:17the process of making or losing money as
22:19much as possible and so I don't think my
22:22advice is right for everyone but I think
22:23it's right for a lot of people and I've
22:25done that my whole life by the way some
22:28of my best investments Facebook Twitter
22:29things of that nature I didn't have a
22:31lot of money I wanted to make money
22:32through joy and it was fun to bet on the
22:35future that I saw and it worked out and
22:37so I think um you know even if you have
22:41savings if you'd rather buy a 100 shares
22:45of your favorite Company's stock because
22:47you rock their clothes or use their
22:49video games or whatever it is that's a
22:51good debate are you better off to enjoy
22:54it than to have a guaranteed return in a
22:58401K right something worth debating just
23:01got to know yourself and know what
23:02you're trying to maximize for if you're
23:05trying to maximize for money creation
23:07then you should let professional money
23:08managers handle it on maximizing Joy how
23:10do you make sure that you're not
23:11straying away from the things that give
23:13you Joy because I'm sure as you're
23:15scaling it's easy when HR gets involved
23:17and you have so many employees to lose
23:20sight of the things that give you Joy
23:22just because you're running a larger
23:23operation so how do you make sure that
23:24doesn't happen by hiring people to do
23:26the things that you don't love so what
23:29do you absolutely love in your business
23:30that you would never hire out well at
23:33the scale we're at now you hire but you
23:36still do it so for example the things I
23:37love is HR I love my people so even
23:41though we have a full pet team people
23:44experience and talent we wanted to
23:46Rebrand it once I realized people didn't
23:47like HR even though we have a huge team
23:50I still allocate a lot of time but I get
23:52to be the cherry on top not the Sunday
23:55you understand it's not a requirement
23:57it's a it's a joy to have um I love
24:00selling so even though kayn our chief
24:03business officer and the new business
24:04team is doing a remarkable job this year
24:06and this is the best year that that team
24:08has ever had I still join a ton of them
24:10because I like selling our company I
24:13like being in the big meetings where
24:15there's a Crossroads in the relationship
24:17so even though Nick and Lisa Buckley and
24:20all these head of Partnerships and
24:22account are remarkable what they do I
24:24like joining the occasional meetings
24:26that really matter not because I don't
24:28trust them because I enjoy being a part
24:30of them but at first I'll give you a
24:32different example we hired a lawyer and
24:37we hired him fast Mark yudkin when we
24:40couldn't afford it because there was no
24:42joy or knowledge or understanding of
24:43anything legal on my end and I did not
24:45want to even begin to learn it right we
24:50we hired um AJ my brother and my dad
24:53have always handled the finances in
24:56essence we the CFO and we hired a CFO
24:59pretty early in our journey um even
25:01though AJ liked it um and so like if AJ
25:04didn't like being a CFO and handling the
25:07books we would have hired somebody to do
25:09finances day one so those are examples
25:12of how you I think about it and how I
25:14think it would help people to maximize
25:16Joy hire for things you don't like to do
25:19and even though you hire for things you
25:21like to do spend more time on that
25:23because you're doubling up on sale this
25:26company has a high happiness ratio for
25:28how big it is and always grows in
25:30Topline Revenue it's because I'm
25:32doubling down on HR and new
25:35business where does the revenue come
25:38from for the business uh clients you
25:40know the Pepsis the Chase Banks the
25:43crafts the Fanatics the Alaska Airlines
25:47are clients so is the majority of the
25:49revenue from direct from the clients for
25:51the 100% of the revenue 100% of the
25:54revenue of VOR X is Client Services 100%
25:57this was the the client service engine
25:58that I built in my world so yeah that's
26:02the business we're like you know an
26:04advertising holding company there's bner
26:06Commerce and even Noam which is Madison
26:08AV spell backwards that's our production
26:10company there's bner 3 which is like our
26:12Consulting Innovation agency there's the
26:15Sasha group named after my dad for small
26:17businesses to do what we do at Vayner
26:18media Vayner media there's Gallery Media
26:20Group which is our publishing arm that
26:22houses 137 p.m. in pure wow um you know
26:26there's tingly Lane trading which is a
26:27barter agency that takes physical goods
26:30from companies and converts it into
26:31media for them so we're we're like a wpp
26:35an Omnicom a publist these are publicly
26:37traded companies that are marketing
26:38service businesses that's the business
26:40we earlier you were talking about the
26:42home runs what are the home runs that
26:44you're going after right now in general
26:47in the macro mhm vriends my vriends
26:50journey which is my intellectual
26:52property that is kind of like a mix
26:54between Pokemon and Sesame Street both
26:56in nft form trading card form animation
26:59form collectible toys form that is a
27:02very big project a very big home run
27:04that's a grand slam if I pull that off
27:06which I intend on you know you're
27:08talking about a very big deal the Hannah
27:10barbaras the Disney the Pokemons the
27:12Hello Kitties the Transformers the Power
27:15Rangers the Harry Potters these
27:17intellectual properties are major
27:18business and so I'm really enjoying that
27:21especially cuz the Sesame Street part is
27:23the purpose you know there's a purpose
27:26in me wanting to make gratitude gorilla
27:28something kids want to put on their
27:30backpack it's called teaching the world
27:32to love gratitude and once you have
27:34gratitude you don't have as much
27:36jealousy and envy because you're
27:37grateful for what you have versus
27:39worried about what everybody else has
27:41and so that's the biggest home run I
27:43think the other biggest home run or
27:44grand slam I'm working on is how do I
27:46make Gary ve as big as popular as
27:48possible with the intent of reframing
27:51how to be an entrepreneur or be what the
27:53success if we can reframe success we can
27:56reframe everything even notice how I
27:58jumped in on that fastest question you
28:00know if you can if you can do it
28:02meaningfully if you can do it with joy I
28:05don't know why people would compromise
28:06being happy for money it's literally
28:09people think money makes you happy and
28:11we know and everybody knows people that
28:13have money that are not happy and yet we
28:16give up happiness every day in the
28:19pursuit of money thinking that will buy
28:20it for us to me it's why don't we fight
28:23for figuring out what makes you happy
28:25and then live within the means of what
28:27you make cuz there's unlimited people on
28:29Earth who make less than $60,000 a year
28:32who are very happy yet we're not very
28:35good at telling that story do you think
28:37before you had money you thought also
28:39that money would make you happy no
28:42because I was always fighting for this
28:44is why I'm so passionate about this I
28:45was pumped at 40,000 a year because I
28:48was doing what I loved I was trying to I
28:49was helping my dad build a business for
28:51him I was going to garage sales on the
28:53weekend cuz I wasn't getting paid much
28:56to buy [Â __Â ] you know and flip it I was
28:58watching the Jets and I was going on
29:01dates and I was living within my means I
29:03didn't have the capacity to take a
29:05private flight I didn't have the
29:06capacity to own an expensive car I
29:09didn't have the capacity to have bougie
29:11things like a driver housek keeper
29:13things of that nature but that was that
29:15that had no impact on 23 25 27 29 31y
29:19old Gary I didn't aspire to have those
29:22things I aspire to have the happiness I
29:25had and I fight for that when have you
29:27found felt in The Last 5 Years furthest
29:29away from being happy personally like
29:31there's always trials and tribulations
29:33and I don't really go too too too much
29:34in my personal life but I think all of
29:36us go through different challenges of
29:38things in our personal life and by the
29:39way one of the reasons I think I'm
29:41happiest is cu I keep my personal life
29:42private I really recommend that for
29:44people as all of us start to live public
29:46lives you don't have to be Charlie
29:47demilio or Logan Paul to have your life
29:49public many of us are posting our
29:51boyfriend and girlfriend or or
29:53significant other we're posting real
29:55life stuff about this I promise you you
29:57if you give the world your private life
30:00they take it so hey that's something
30:03worth considering for everybody's
30:04listening no matter even if you don't
30:06aspire to be Taylor Swift like you give
30:09your you give your outer c not not your
30:11family and friends like your Outer
30:13Circle you give them permission to be in
30:15your relationship they own your
30:16relationship something worth thinking
30:18about anyway to answer you
30:20professionally I had a really tough day
30:21it was I don't know if it was the
30:23furthest from happiness but it was a
30:24real gut punch and we started with this
30:26the day I realized my cander made me
30:29wrong in a thousand relationships that I
30:32had in my mind not them because in my
30:3420s and 30s when I would fire someone
30:37after them being there for two years and
30:38they sucked no [Â __Â ] they stunk the
30:41whole time but I never said anything and
30:43I didn't manage them you know I didn't
30:45make it better I just let it sit and I
30:48thought I was doing them a favor right
30:50but what I was doing was I was in
30:51creating entitlement and I was in
30:53creating resentment was creating
30:54entitlement and resentment entitlement
30:56on their end resentment on my end and
30:58that I would fire them and they would be
31:00shocked and mad and [Â __Â ] you Gary at the
31:03most extreme because usually I was like
31:05so close with them that they would feel
31:06comfortable doing that especially in the
31:08liquor store you know stock guys don't
31:10give a [Â __Â ] um and all the kids I hired
31:12early on at bner kids I was mad at them
31:15I was like how do these people not see
31:16it are you [Â __Â ] kidding me I've been
31:18doing charity for the last two years
31:20five six years ago when I had that
31:22moment that come to Jesus moment like
31:24really that day or two or week that it
31:26was clear on my in the front of my head
31:28not in the back and I would look myself
31:30in the mirror or I would sit and take a
31:32shower or I'd be on a flight and think
31:34about it or while I was dreaming and
31:35sleeping about it that week when I was
31:38reconciling wait a minute it's been me
31:41my inability to tell the truth about how
31:43I feel when I'm upset and even when I'm
31:46happy like one of the things I'm
31:47thinking a lot about now is I don't
31:48smell the roses for myself and that
31:50leads to my management style I'm I'm
31:52better at being like good job like I
31:54sprinkle it more than I do bad job but
31:56it's not like it's over overtly in me I
31:58don't communicate it through words I
32:00communicate it through actions and Vibe
32:03when that happened to me that was a low
32:05point of my professional career that
32:07means that I had to reconcile that you
32:10know all of us would like to think we're
32:12good and perfect you know what I mean
32:14and we know we're not but when you don't
32:17see it when you don't see that you're
32:19spoiled like when you don't see it when
32:21you're complaining with your friends but
32:23your friends all know that your parents
32:25are paying your rent and you're still
32:26complaining they don't have that they're
32:28not looking at you with sympathy they're
32:31looking at you with judgment to your
32:35delusion of your entitlement everyone's
32:37looking through the lens of themselves
32:39when they look at you and even though
32:41that person might be right just cuz your
32:42parents are paying rent doesn't mean
32:43your life's awesome but it's still
32:45something we need to like talk about
32:47which is here's a good question for
32:48everybody what is a flaw that you have
32:51that you can't see right now and that's
32:53something I've spent you know what kind
32:55of really caught me was that something I
32:57spent a lot of time on me saying this
32:59out loud is something I've done to
33:00myself which is why over my 47 years on
33:03Earth starting at 101 12 13 when [Â __Â ]
33:06like that started hitting my radar which
33:08is weird which is why I cruised through
33:10high school I was so self-aware I
33:12struggled with no peer pressure anytime
33:14somebody picked on me or was mean to me
33:16and growing up in the 80s and 90s in New
33:18Jersey that happened every day kids I
33:20felt bad for them I was like I wonder if
33:22their parents I wonder like I would
33:24paint pictures I'd be like oh this
33:26person is picking on me but like maybe
33:28their dad's an alcoholic like I would do
33:30that at like 15 and by the way in the
33:3380s and 90s the world wasn't as aware
33:36but I was anyway that all led me to be
33:38pretty self-aware and like work on [Â __Â ]
33:41but this [Â __Â ] cander boy was that
33:43hiding that [Â __Â ] was cander you
33:45[Â __Â ] you really hid somewhere in
33:47I don't know where the [Â __Â ] you were
33:48under my appendix up my [Â __Â ] I don't
33:50know where the [Â __Â ] you were but you
33:51were [Â __Â ] hiding and I couldn't find
33:53you and the day I found it was a low
33:56point point because it made me have to
33:58rewind 25 years and think through a lot
34:01of things and change my perspective I
34:04love that the self-awareness is so
34:05important we all need it and and I'm
34:07doing things right now that I can't see
34:09and I'm excited to challenge myself and
34:11I challenge everyone to do it because
34:12you will get much happier because let me
34:14say this and this will help a lot of
34:16people this is something I've said in
34:17the past and I've got a lot of feedback
34:19from this quote so I'm hoping this helps
34:20someone that's never heard it before the
34:22only people you're tricking are the
34:24people you don't want to trick you're
34:25not tricking winners
34:27you're tricking other people that are
34:29losing with your so if you know you're
34:32doing something wrong or you're doing
34:35poorly you might think you're tricking
34:37people you're not the most self-aware
34:40and emotionally intelligent people
34:41around you they may not say something to
34:43you for example I might be your best
34:45friend in my 20s and 30s I would have
34:47never said anything but I knew I knew
34:49what my friends were doing wrong or what
34:51they sucked at I just didn't have the
34:53stomach to tell them and I promise you
34:55your most self-aware loving people
34:56around you your mom your dad your best
34:58friend your spouse your partner they're
34:59not telling you either but they know so
35:01you're not tricking them so you might as
35:03well figure out what the [Â __Â ] you want
35:04to do with that that's an amazing way to
35:07end so the we have a closing tradition
35:09podcast is called Erica taught me but
