00:00 you're stranded restricted of movement
00:03 and starving for a full month this was
00:05 the situation we first
00:07 see rory noah zorro in the first time we
00:11 he's portrayed as a bad guy like a
00:13 ruthless bounty hunter
00:15 it's not long after until we find out
00:17 that he was the one who submitted
00:18 himself into that position
00:20 taking whatever punishment he had to
00:22 take in order to protect the town being
00:24 oppressed by the navy
00:26 he accepts the public shaming and
00:28 physical abuse without a single
00:30 complaint to zorro reputation and abuse
00:34 he doesn't try to explain why he's there
00:36 in order to gain sympathy points
00:38 he doesn't shout motivational shonen
00:41 he's fully willing to carry the burden
00:44 and overcome his hardships he doesn't
00:47 care if anyone knows
00:48 he's doing what is right simply because
00:51 it is what is right
00:55 stoicism is an ancient greek school of
00:59 the school of thought has been
01:00 simplified over the years to mean the
01:02 endurance of pain or hardship without
01:04 the display of feelings and without
01:07 stoicism is willfully taking up your
01:09 cross with no one to help you
01:11 and not telling anyone it's unwavering
01:14 and steadfast leadership this is what we
01:18 dignity these stoic qualities along with
01:20 his strength are why people often assume
01:22 he is the captain of the straw hats
01:25 holding a burden without any sign of
01:26 weakness is what gives the crew
01:28 something to look up to
01:30 zoro was likely inspired by the japanese
01:33 known as bushido bushido is the
01:37 moral values bushido is most commonly
01:40 described as some combination of
01:43 frugality loyalty martial arts mastery
01:47 and honor until death as the future
01:52 luffy needs someone who can match him on
01:54 the battlefield luffy is the actual
01:56 captain and i've talked about why that's
01:58 important in a very old video of mine
02:00 but under different circumstances zorro
02:02 could be an effective captain
02:04 in his own way as the unofficial vice
02:06 captain zorro doesn't ever question
02:11 he only steps in to point out the
02:12 seriousness of the situation
02:14 most notably when luffy wanted to bring
02:16 us back into the crew after usop
02:18 challenged luffy to a duel for the going
02:22 zorro disapproved even willing to quit
02:24 the crew himself if luffy brushed the
02:27 off and treated it as if it were another
02:30 stoicism is self-sacrifice and the
02:32 mastery of one's self
02:34 regardless of if you believe this is
02:36 something we ought to celebrate or if
02:38 you believe this is something that
02:39 encourages us to not open up about our
02:42 there is something we find innately
02:45 there's something macho and respectful
02:47 about perseverance and loyalty without
02:49 wanting recognition
02:50 the willingness to risk your life to
02:52 save someone you barely know
02:54 it takes a strong sense of morality to
02:56 so swiftly and sacrificially give
02:59 up to people you don't know because
03:00 they're being oppressed by a power
03:03 zorro understands that power ought not
03:05 to be used to oppress
03:06 those weaker than you but instead used
03:09 to protect those weaker than you from
03:11 the forces of nature
03:13 in his battle against mr one his haki
03:16 not because he was fighting for the sake
03:18 of fighting but because he was fighting
03:21 he understood that not everything ought
03:22 to be cut a gentle palm tree is innocent
03:26 but an enemy like mr one is a threat
03:29 power is intentional not unhinged
03:32 power is meant to protect not
03:34 senselessly destroy
03:36 it's because of this that we see zorro
03:38 strongly detest evil individuals who
03:40 exhibit extreme cruelty towards the
03:43 when the celestial dragon shot hachon
03:46 zoro was silently wrathful as he fully
03:48 intended to cut down the world noble if
03:50 it weren't for luffy
03:52 when zoro was fighting weaker opponents
03:54 he will often use the dull side of his
03:56 blade as to make the opponent
03:57 acknowledge his superiority
03:59 while also not hurting them too much as
04:00 to severely injure them
04:02 he understands the importance of
04:04 restraint this type of bravery
04:07 courage and masculinity is seen in the
04:08 powerful men of today who sacrificed
04:10 their life working as firefighters and
04:12 soldiers this all culminates into what
04:15 is my favorite scene of
04:16 all of anime zorros nothing happened
04:22 this scene comes off the heels of the
04:24 straw hat's combined effort to take down
04:28 luffy is knocked out from the intense
04:29 fight and the rest of the characters are
04:32 kuma suddenly appears on the island to
04:34 inform maria that blackbeard will
04:36 replace crocodile as a warlord
04:38 and that ace had been captured by
04:42 kuma receives new orders he's now
04:44 ordered to capture the crew and kill the
04:46 remaining witnesses as to not have the
04:48 information of mario's defeat
04:49 leak elsewhere zoro prepares to fight
04:52 and mentions how he would be willing to
04:54 die for the crew if need be
04:56 when they fight kuma easily counters all
05:00 kuma decided to spare everyone by
05:02 creating a pressurized air bomb
05:04 knocking everyone out in hopes of
05:06 bringing just luffy's head back to the
05:08 zorro however was still conscious and
05:11 slashed him with a surprise attack
05:13 as the battle ensues zorro is bleeding
05:16 barely able to stand understanding the
05:19 fight was not his to win
05:20 he offers himself up instead of luffy as
05:24 before kuma could answer sanji steps in
05:27 barely conscious not able to walk and
05:30 offers his life to ensure
05:32 luffy and zoro's dreams are fulfilled
05:34 zoro had already made up his mind
05:36 however and knocked sanji
05:38 out to truly test zorro's resolve kuma
05:41 expels all of luffy's pain and gives a
05:43 portion of it to zorro
05:44 showing just how much pain luffy goes
05:46 through every arc to protect his crew
05:49 even a small dose of it inflicts serious
05:53 kuma tells zorro that if he were to take
05:56 especially in his current condition that
06:00 zoro was still resolute and takes all of
06:02 luffy's pain without a second thought
06:04 kuma acknowledges luffy's crew and
06:07 regaining consciousness sanji wakes up
06:10 and finds zoro standing in the middle of
06:12 a collection of debris
06:13 painted in blood upon asking zoro what
06:17 he just says nothing happened zorro took
06:20 all of luffy's pain
06:22 nearly killed himself saving the crew
06:25 any acknowledgement especially now
06:28 we're all trending towards the direction
06:30 of sharing every struggle
06:32 we're constantly talking about our
06:33 stress and our anxiety
06:36 people love talking about how busy they
06:37 are how tired they are
06:39 and how stressed they are zorro does
06:42 he voluntarily shoulders the burden
06:45 anguish and not sharing any of it
06:48 replying with nothing more than
06:50 nothing happened i think we should apply
06:53 into our own life he took the sacrifice
06:56 with love and honor
06:58 believing wholeheartedly in luffy and
07:00 the crew without demanding
07:02 in other words zoro feels called to be
07:06 to have struggle to go through pain and
07:08 to shut up and deal with it
07:10 this is what separates zorro's
07:12 swordsmanship from someone like mihawk
07:14 when the story is over zoro will be a
07:17 different greatest swordsman than mihawk
07:19 because he believes in his crew
07:21 he's fighting for something beyond
07:22 himself he ultimately trusts in the will
07:25 and the fate of his captain so in the
07:28 end whatever happens he'll be content
07:31 jeffrey bartzel in his book speculative
07:34 language and stoic language theory
07:36 in the medieval allegorical language
07:38 states that stoics believe
07:39 all things are bound together through a
07:41 complex and interconnected network of
07:44 part of the reason zoro doesn't complain
07:47 is because like other characters in the
07:49 he believes in fate his time will come
07:53 this is perhaps the most extreme example
07:56 and that i think is exactly why it's so
08:00 there are other characters who do
08:02 similar things such as luffy and impel
08:04 down and marine ford where he surely
08:06 does sacrifice a lot
08:08 but zoro does it quietly never bringing
08:10 too much attention to himself
08:12 and that's what separates zoro's
08:14 sacrifice from everyone else
08:16 he doesn't say any more than two words
08:20 there was a time where zorro cried after
08:22 we met him it was after losing to mihawk
08:24 and promising luffy he would never lose
08:27 his goal was right in sight but at the
08:30 same time he had to acknowledge
08:31 just how far away it was that's
08:34 difficult for someone
08:35 so determined to accept but as a
08:38 he understands he has to push through it
08:41 there's nothing wrong with showing
08:42 weakness as long as you grow from it
08:44 work through the emotion and come back
08:48 and this is what zorro vowed to do he
08:51 tells luffy that he will never
08:52 lose another fight to be the strongest
08:56 you're going to need mental fortitude
08:58 you need to be strong in your body
09:00 and mind on that note for one to be as
09:05 one must first master the self if one
09:07 can master their own desires
09:09 one can liberate the self from
09:11 distractions it makes you collected
09:13 calculated and in complete control of
09:15 yourself aristotle said
09:17 i count him braver who overcomes his
09:19 desires than him who conquers his
09:22 the hardest battle is one fought with
09:25 stoicism does not mean not feeling
09:28 that's a common misconception
09:30 everyone still has feelings stoicism is
09:33 just accepting those feelings and
09:34 knowing you don't have to be a slave to
09:37 zoro was a heavy drinker he would drink
09:39 every time he had the chance
09:41 i wouldn't go as far as to say it was an
09:43 addiction of his but it was something
09:45 mihawk felt was limiting his potential
09:48 if one does not overcome the self how
09:50 can they overcome the enemy
09:52 and that's why zorro giving up alcohol
09:54 was important to me
09:56 despite the critique zorro gets after
09:58 the time skip for emoting less
10:00 i believe this is why oda has written
10:02 zorro the way he is
10:04 someone who is so determined on his goal
10:08 undeterred by anything that it makes
10:10 sense that he would naturally emote less
10:12 in wano zorro has opened up a little bit
10:15 for a little bit i did feel like he was
10:17 a little bit too closed off
10:19 i think now oda is starting to balance
10:22 and open fun regardless i think a vice
10:26 and leader like zoro has to carry pain
10:30 tiredness be fed up exhausted and not
10:34 to carry it with dignity there still are
10:37 times when zoro would get a break
10:39 but there was never a moment where you
10:40 would hear zorro complain
10:42 he never feels the need to vent nor
10:46 he carries that quiet dignity and quiet
10:51 on a more superficial level oda has a
10:54 knack for making things as
10:55 over the top as possible whether that be
10:58 his character designs
10:59 the powers he creates or the lengths of
11:03 with that in mind it's clear that oda
11:05 tried to make zorro's design as badass
11:07 as possible similar to characters like
11:10 crocodile and katakuri it's why zorro
11:13 uses three swords with one in his mouth
11:16 it sounds silly on paper but in practice
11:19 it makes his fighting style unique from
11:20 any other character
11:22 and also looks really cool it's why he's
11:25 extremely muscular and has an excessive
11:28 including one on his left eye which no
11:30 one has yet to even acknowledge
11:32 that scar in particular adds an aura of
11:35 mystique around his character
11:37 there's theories everywhere but the most
11:39 popular one is that he's hiding some
11:42 power this all adds to his appeal to me
11:45 i know this isn't confirmed yet but with
11:47 how the theories are making it sound
11:49 it sounds like everyone knows that he
11:52 has some sort of demonic power
11:54 and no one dares to even mention it he's
11:56 containing all that power within himself
11:59 and of course not telling anyone that
12:02 bad as hell his presence alone has
12:06 so this would actually be appropriate
12:10 always training as someone who's always
12:12 training myself this just adds more to
12:16 in general you could actually apply a
12:17 lot of what i said about zorro here
12:19 to myself so i will admit that there is
12:21 a lot of personal bias
12:23 all in all a thick-skinned pirate hunter
12:26 with unwavering loyalty
12:27 an iconic design fighting style and
12:30 intimidating demonic aura
12:32 is what zoro is to me all of this
12:35 is why zoro is my favorite character
12:38 in all of fiction thank you all so much
