00:00you've just returned home from a
00:01beautiful tropical vacation and as you
00:03open the front door you were attacked by
00:05a dog with tiny frantic licks of
00:08affection you've been gone for what must
00:10seem like forever to the young German
00:11Shepherd but what neither of you realize
00:13is that within hours you will have to
00:15leave again this time to the hospital
00:18where you will fight for your life as
00:21your limbs slowly turn black all because
00:24of one wrong move from your puppy Marie
00:27trainer had only recently returned home
00:29from a vacation to punana when on Friday
00:31May 10th 2019 she began feeling unwell
00:34with a backache and nausea we just
00:36thought it was the flu so I treated it
00:39like the flu but by 2: or 3: in the
00:41morning the following day after her
00:42temperature spiked and then dropped she
00:44and her husband made the decision to
00:46visit the local Alliance Community
00:48Hospital emergency room but later that
00:50same day as her symptoms worsened she
00:52was sent to Altman hospital's medical
00:54Intensive Care Unit she was complaining
00:56of agonizing pain in her hands and legs
00:58and by Sunday May 12th became unable to
01:00breathe on her own so doctors decided to
01:03put her on life support and a medically
01:04induced coma Marie's stepdaughter Gina
01:07Premier who's a nurse at the same
01:08Hospital Marie had become a patient in
01:10said we didn't know exactly what it was
01:13but we knew it was an infection of some
01:14sort medical staff were unable to
01:16pinpoint the cause of the infection
01:17plaguing Marie's body and the following
01:19day they informed her family that
01:21whatever it was it had attacked the
01:23small blood vessels in each of her limbs
01:25Gang Green was setting in and blood
01:27clots were cutting off blood flow to
01:29Marie's arms and legs causing the skin
01:31and flesh to die Marie's family couldn't
01:34believe what they were hearing that was
01:35a pretty hard pill for us to all swallow
01:37to say she was fine a couple days ago on
01:39vacation and now she's actively getting
01:41worse by the minute and now her hands
01:43and feet aren't alive like this doesn't
01:45happen it's 2019 said Gina after
01:48accepting that there were no other
01:49options doctors took Marie into surgery
01:51in order to save her life unfortunately
01:53due to the amount of muscle damage from
01:55the infection there was no hope in
01:57Saving her legs but after amputating
01:59them doctors worked tirelessly to remove
02:01blood clots in her arms in an effort to
02:03save what they could by the 7th hour I
02:05had probably taken out over 40 or 50
02:07clots said her orthopedic surgeon Dr AJ
02:10Seth and on May 18th 9 days after
02:13entering the hospital Maria woke from
02:15her medically induced coma to find that
02:16her legs and hands had been amputated
02:19and her life forever changed Marie's
02:22doctor said this is off the scale one of
02:24the worst cases we have seen in terms of
02:25how ill people become with infections
02:28she was close to death but what what had
02:30even caused the infection in the first
02:31place it was difficult to identify said
02:34Dr Margaret Kobe the medical director of
02:36infectious disease who treated Marie
02:38we're kind of the detectives we went
02:40through all these diagnosises until we
02:42could narrow things down and narrow
02:44things down they did because 7 days
02:46after being presented with Marie's case
02:48a cultured blood sample revealed to
02:49doctors the source of the infection to
02:51be a bacterium called capnocytophaga
02:54koris after surgery Marie was put on
02:56antibiotics to kill the bacteria in
02:58question and blood them thinners to
03:00prevent more blood clots from forming on
03:02July 14th a GoFundMe page was created by
03:05Marie's son Matthew who wrote that his
03:07mother had gone through six surgeries to
03:09date and was over 60 days into this
03:11hospitalization and the fight of her
03:13life but what exactly is capnocytophaga
03:16koris and how did Marie contract it well
03:19it wasn't something she picked up well
03:21on her tropical vacation nope it was
03:23much closer to home than that we learned
03:26from the infectious disease specialists
03:27that this was a normal flora sln normal
03:29bacteria native to all dogs and most
03:32cats mouths though rare the bacteria
03:34usually passes from dogs or cats to
03:36humans through bites or scratches and it
03:38seems that when Marie got home her
03:40German Shepherd puppy licked an already
03:42slightly infected cut it was just a
03:44random and rare occurrence that caused
03:46The Perfect Storm within her body
03:48resulting in the devastating Illness but
03:51Marie didn't hold any hard feelings
03:52towards her pup and actually asked
03:54doctors if her two dogs were allowed to
03:56visit her while she recovered they
03:57brought them here two times at the
03:59hospital so I can see them and that just
04:01put the biggest smile on my face Marie
04:03said she eventually recovered enough to
04:05be transferred from the hospital to a
04:07rehab facility where over the course of
04:08the following year little by little she
04:10learned to use her new prosthetic legs
04:12wrists and hands I've been feeling very
04:15good they're healing very well I'm so
04:17ready to move forward so take it from
04:20Marie and be cautious make sure even the
04:22tiniest wounds are treated and dressed
04:24properly especially if you expect to be
04:26getting any puppy love from your Furry
