03:59 him and live in God's kingdom and it's

04:02 an upside-down kingdom where there are

04:04 no privileged members so the poor the

04:07 nobodies the wealthy the religious

04:09 everybody is invited and is called to

04:12 turn to repent and to follow Jesus and

04:14 join his family Jesus says that he's not

04:16 here to set aside the commands of the

04:19 Torah or the Old Testament rather he's

04:21 here to fulfill all of that through his

04:24 life through his teachings he's here to

04:27 transform

04:28 the hearts of his people so that they

04:30 can truly love God and love their

04:32 neighbor including their enemy after

04:34 concluding his great teaching on the

04:35 kingdom the next section shows Jesus

04:37 bringing the kingdom into reality in the

04:40 day-to-day lives of people

04:41 so Matthew's arranged here nine stories

04:44 about Jesus bringing the power of God's

04:46 kingdom into the lives of hurting broken

04:50 people there are three groups of three

04:52 stories and they're all about people who

04:54 are sick or have broken bodies or

04:56 they're in danger and jesus heals or

04:59 saves them by these acts of grace and

05:01 power and then right in between these

05:03 triads we find two parallel stories

05:06 about Jesus's call that people should

05:09 follow him Matthew's making a point here

05:12 one can only experience the power of

05:14 Jesus's grace by following him and

05:17 becoming his disciple now after Matthew

05:20 has shown the power of the kingdom

05:21 through Jesus Jesus then extends his

05:24 reach by sending out the twelve

05:26 disciples who are going to go do what

05:28 he's been doing and this leads to the

05:29 second large block of teaching chapter

05:31 10 and here Jesus teaches his disciples

05:34 how to announce the kingdom and what to

05:36 expect once they do many among Israel

05:40 are accepting Jesus in his offer of the

05:42 kingdom but Israel's leaders they aren't

05:45 they stand to lose a lot if they repent

05:47 and become disciples of Jesus and so

05:49 Jesus knows they're going to reject him

05:51 and persecute his followers which is

05:53 exactly what happens in the next section

05:55 chapters 11 through 13 matthew has

05:57 collected a group of stories about how

05:59 people are responding to Jesus in his

06:01 message and it's a mixed bag so some

06:04 stories are positive people love Jesus

06:06 and they think he's the Messiah

06:07 others are more neutral like John the

06:10 Baptist or even the members of Jesus's

06:12 own family and they make it clear that

06:14 Jesus is not what they expected and then

06:17 you have Israel's leaders they're

06:18 entirely negative you have the Pharisees

06:20 and the Bible scholars they all reject

06:23 Jesus together they think is a false

06:25 teacher he's leading the people astray

06:27 they think he's blasphemous and these

06:29 exalted claims he's making about himself

06:31 but Jesus isn't surprised or thrown by

06:35 all these diverse responses in fact he

06:37 focuses on it in the third block of

06:45 kingdom like about a farmer throwing

06:47 seed on four types of soil or about a
