00:00in the world's biggest Democratic
00:01exercise India has announced that it
00:03will vote in national elections from the
00:0519th of April with the polls to be held
00:07over several weeks the Hindu Nationalist
00:09and incumbent prime minister Narendra
00:11Modi is strongly favored to win a third
00:14term it's the world's largest democracy
00:16in which 198 million people are eligible
00:19to cast ballots here's the chief
00:21election commissioner making the
00:23announcement we'll do it in seven phases
00:27as was done last time seven phas
00:31phase one will start from 20th March
00:35notification 5 days from
00:38now our South Asia correspondent Samira
00:40Hussein is in New Delhi where the
00:41announcement was made I asked her how
00:43long it would take before we got the
00:45results this is the world's most
00:48populous country and there are 198
00:51million eligible voters uh in this 2024
00:55election so actually it doesn't happen
00:58over one day it happens over several
01:00weeks for this particular election
01:03they've decided it's going to happen in
01:05seven phases and in total it will be
01:07about 6 weeks before we get the results
01:10now the last day for polling in a part
01:14of in a few States what they do is they
01:16divide the country into seven different
01:18areas and different areas vote all at
01:20once and in terms of when we get the
01:22results the big results day for everyone
01:25will be the 4th of June so it does take
01:28a long time to get the the pulse of the
01:31of the people in this country but I
01:34wanted to know what are people thinking
01:36about when it comes to this election and
01:38what are some of the issues that really
01:43listen I'm going to vote for Modi and
01:46the BJP because no one stands out as a
01:48possible candidate from the
01:52opposition Modi government has not
01:54fulfilled any of their promises he
01:57promised to help the farmers but he
01:59hasn't I will vote for the one who helps
02:01the poor each and everyone even if it's
02:03someone small you know even if it's
02:05someone poor someone who doesn't come
02:07from a solid background each and
02:09everyone's right should be heard and you
02:11know the lower segment of the society
02:13they should also be they the their vote
02:15should also have a validation pollution
02:17problem which comes up every time it's
02:19going on every year and people with
02:21bronchitis elderly people young people
02:24everybody's suffering something needs to
02:25be done we just cannot treat this as a
02:27vot bank and not do anything about it
02:31and Samir we know that Prime Minister
02:33Modi is hoping for a third term tell us
02:35a little bit about the state of the
02:36opposition and what kind of chances they
02:37have to go up against
02:40him look a third term in office is what
02:44prime minister Narendra Modi is seeking
02:46he has been in office now for a decade
02:49and he has pretty much dominated sort of
02:52the north part of the country the
02:54northern part of the country What's
02:56called the Hindi belt it's been a
02:58difficult Road for or the main
03:00opposition party the congress party they
03:03have really tried to make inroads in
03:05different parts of the country but
03:07they've really been uh they haven't been
03:09able to gain that much traction part of
03:11it has to do with the prime minister's
03:15BJP that his political party that has
03:18really has a stronghold uh on the
03:21country and in terms of disseminating
03:23information but the other problem of
03:25course is the disorganization Within
03:28These this particular opposition party
03:31that said if you look at the country
03:33although I mentioned that you know the
03:35Prime Minister really pretty much
03:37dominates the north part of the country
03:39if you look at the South there's a lot
03:41of regional parties that actually are
03:44able to sort of keep the BJP at Bay so
03:48what we're going to see in these
03:50upcoming elections is certainly a push
03:53by the government to try and make
03:55inroads into the southern parts of the
03:58country so it's really going to be an
04:00interesting election to watch and look
04:02we're talking about the world's most
04:04populous country clearly evidenced by
04:07the number of people around me now and I
04:09think this is certainly a an election
04:11that only people in the country are
04:13going to be watching but it's certainly
04:15one that countries around the world will
04:17be keeping an eye on as well
