There are two buckets of things we can do with our time: maintain the status quo or progress our lives.

00:00 hey friends welcome back to the channel
00:01 if you're new here my name is Ali I'm a
00:02 doctor turned entrepreneur and the
00:03 author of feel-good productivity which
00:05 is about how to do more of what matters
00:06 to you in a way that's enjoyable
00:08 meaningful and sustainable and this is
00:09 the first episode of a three-part series
00:11 about how to manage your time outside of
00:13 your 9 to-5 job now this is a topic
00:15 that's really close to my heart because
00:16 I started this YouTube channel and my
00:18 business and basically every good thing
00:20 in my life has happened as a result of
00:21 me being able to manage my time outside
00:23 of the time where I had a 9 to-5 job
00:25 when I was working full-time as a doctor
00:27 and really this video series is for
00:28 people who for example haven't 9 to5
00:30 whether you're a student or a
00:31 professional or whatever and you want to
00:33 do stuff outside of it but you maybe
00:35 struggle to have the time and energy to
00:37 do the stuff outside of the 9 to5 and
00:39 the stuff might be starting a business
00:40 or growing a side hustle or like you
00:41 know this sort of thing but it might not
00:43 be it might also be just taking up a
00:44 hobby or making progress on that
00:45 language that you're trying to learn or
00:47 even just giving more time to your
00:48 friends and family and so really in this
00:49 video series I want to try and share as
00:51 many tips as I can so that you can take
00:53 away some kind of philosophies or
00:54 mindsets or experiments to run in your
00:56 own life that can help you achieve more
00:58 of the things that really matter to you
00:59 outside of your95 and so in this video
01:01 we're going to be talking about the
01:03 foundational mindsets and philosophies
01:05 that you need to manage your time
01:06 appropriately outside of your95 in video
01:08 two we're going to be talking about how
01:10 to not waste your life all the time
01:11 drains that get in the way and then in
01:13 video number three we're going to talk
01:14 about the five skills that you need to
01:15 master in order to become amazing at
01:17 time management depending on when you're
01:19 watching this these videos May well be
01:20 out so they'll be linked down in the
01:21 video description and I would recommend
01:23 you watch them in order because you know
01:25 then you get the philosophy before
01:26 worrying about the tactics all right
01:28 mindset number one time management is a
01:30 really valuable skill to work on now the
01:32 unfortunate truth is that we are all
01:33 going to die and the other unfortunate
01:35 truth or maybe fortunate truth is that
01:38 time is our single most valuable
01:40 non-renewable resource we can always
01:42 make more money but we can never make
01:43 more time the fact that you're here
01:44 watching this video and maybe subscribe
01:46 to my channel means that you care enough
01:48 about this topic you care about personal
01:49 development personal growth you probably
01:52 want to make the most of your time
01:53 outside of your 9 to-5 but you might be
01:55 you know like I was back in the day
01:56 feeling a little overwhelmed with all
01:58 the stuff that there is to do and I
01:59 think some sometimes people will dismiss
02:00 this to be like well you know people who
02:02 teach about time management they're just
02:04 like promoting hustle culture or like
02:05 toxic productivity or any of that stuff
02:07 but this is not about getting you to
02:10 work harder this is not about getting
02:11 you to hustle harder this is literally
02:13 about us appreciating that our time is
02:15 our own to do with as we as we like and
02:18 if we tell ourselves the story that
02:19 we're bad at time management and we
02:21 haven't like actively worked on the
02:22 skill of time management then we fall
02:24 into the default of like turning on the
02:26 TV going on Netflix and just clicking
02:28 yes on whatever the recommendation has
02:29 in store for us we fall into the
02:31 unintentional default of just going on
02:33 our phones and habitually picking Tik
02:35 Tok or Instagram or YouTube and just
02:36 sort of scrolling and watching the
02:37 videos and the thing that made this hit
02:39 home for me when I started to get into
02:41 this productivity procrastination time
02:43 management type stuff the thing that
02:45 really made it hit home was that I
02:46 didn't want to be in a position where
02:48 you know a few decades from now I would
02:50 look back on my life and I would feel
02:52 like I'd squandered the time and the
02:54 energy that I had when I was younger
02:55 realistically I probably I'm probably
02:57 not going to remember the TV shows that
02:58 I watched unless they're absolutely
02:59 amazing gave me THS for example I'm very
03:01 unlikely to remember the time I spent
03:02 scrolling YouTube shorts or Instagram or
03:04 Tik Tok but if I use my time
03:06 intentionally and effectively on the
03:07 things that I wanted to use it at the
03:08 time on like the H Hobbies or friends
03:10 and family or building my business
03:11 whatever the thing might be I'm far more
03:13 likely to sort of give a high five to my
03:15 younger self and so really the problem
03:17 we're dealing with here is not a toxic
03:19 productivity or hustle culture type
03:20 thing I'm not telling you you just have
03:21 to be more productive what I'm
03:23 suggesting is that time is so valuable
03:26 and so important that spending a little
03:28 bit of it learning how to use it better
03:29 I think is a skill that that all of us
03:31 could benefit from now as a bit of a
03:32 side note one thing that actually helped
03:34 me be more intentional about my
03:35 nutrition when I was working a 9 to-5
03:37 job and even beyond that is Hu who are
03:39 very kindly sponsoring this video now
03:40 I've been a paying customer of hu since
03:42 2017 since my 5ifth year of medical
03:43 school and that was actually when I
03:44 first started this YouTube channel as
03:46 well and I've been eating heel fairly
03:47 regularly since then because it's a
03:49 fantastic way to make sure that my
03:50 nutritional bases are covered when I
03:52 don't have the time or I choose not to
03:54 make the time to cook a healthy and
03:55 nutritious meal obviously gold stand
03:57 would be you cook and eat a healthy meal
03:59 for every single meal of the day but in
04:00 reality with busy lives and especially
04:01 with a hectic work schedule it can be
04:03 often hard to make time to do that three
04:05 times a day and the nice thing about
04:06 heel is that in those moments instead of
04:08 eating a totally unhealthy meal from
04:09 like the work cafeteria or from like the
04:12 Starbucks on the way to work I can
04:13 instead just eat heel and most of their
04:15 meals have 400 calories at least 20 g of
04:17 protein 26 vitamins and minerals and
04:19 nutrients and so I know that my bases
04:21 are at least covered now if you've been
04:22 thinking of starting heal you should
04:23 definitely check out their new
04:24 bestseller bundle and this is a bundle
04:25 of all of their bestselling products so
04:27 you can see which one you like best it
04:28 includes the heal of Black Edition which
04:29 is my personal favorite because it's a
04:31 higher protein version of heel it also
04:32 includes some instant meals nutrition
04:34 bars and daily a toz vitamin cans and
04:37 yeah I'm just genuinely a massive fan of
04:38 hu and I think it's amazing for those
04:39 moments of the day where you don't have
04:41 the time to have a proper healthy meal
04:43 instead so if you're interested in
04:44 checking out the bestseller bundle then
04:45 do check out the link in the video
04:46 description and the bundle also includes
04:48 a free t-shirt and a Shaker which are
04:50 both actually really high quality and
04:51 with the bundle you also get a nutrition
04:53 guide that gives you some advice on your
04:54 own nutrition and also how to get the
04:56 most out of heel so thank you so much
04:57 heel for sponsoring this video and let's
04:59 get back to to it all right mindset
05:00 number two is you can do anything you
05:03 want but not everything you want if
05:05 you're watching this video and if maybe
05:06 you follow my channel then you're
05:07 probably the sort of person that takes
05:09 on too much stuff you're probably quite
05:12 ambitious you're probably quite
05:13 hardworking you probably want to thrive
05:15 in your 9 to5 you want to do all at work
05:16 but maybe you also want to be
05:17 intentional about your health and
05:18 relationships and want to level those up
05:20 there is a phrase there there is a story
05:23 that is wrongly attributed to Warren
05:25 Buffett but like I think it's
05:26 directionally legit I don't know where
05:28 this attribution came from but guy
05:29 called Alex Bayan once asked Warren
05:31 Buffett at his Omaha conference Mr
05:33 Buffett I've heard that one of your ways
05:36 of focusing your energy is that you
05:38 write down the 25 things you want to
05:41 achieve choose the top five and then
05:44 avoid the bottom 20 bu kind of laughed
05:46 and said like that was complete BS like
05:47 he never he has never said that well I'm
05:49 actually more curious about how you came
05:50 up with it
05:53 because it really isn't it really isn't
05:55 the case it sounds like a very good
05:56 method of operating but it's it's much
05:59 more discipline that I actually am but
06:01 you know directionally the advice is
06:03 still legit even if Warren Buffett never
06:04 actually said the thing a lot of our
06:06 priorities 5 to2 end up derailing and
06:10 taking a lot of time away from the
06:11 things that truly matter to us and
06:12 really we all have the best will in the
06:14 world when it comes to this like you
06:15 know maybe you watch my channel and
06:16 you're like oh it' be pretty cool to be
06:17 a YouTuber I want to start a YouTube
06:18 channel and then maybe you're like oh
06:19 you know I'd love to write online you
06:21 know for me I was like I want to get
06:22 better at the guitar and I want to get
06:23 better at piano I want to get better at
06:25 singing I'd love to be able to play by
06:26 ear oh man drawing would be really cool
06:27 I'd love to learn how to draw you know
06:29 what I'd love to learn Japanese cuz I
06:30 like watching anime and it's just we
06:32 keep on adding to the to-do list and we
06:34 fail to realize that a big part of time
06:36 management is about prioritization it's
06:38 about knowing what you want to say no to
06:40 so that you have the time energy and
06:42 focus to truly say yes to the things
06:44 that really matter and there is a story
06:46 from my time as a doctor that I I I I
06:48 always think about um this was when I
06:50 was in my first week of working in the
06:53 emergency department and I walk into the
06:55 emergency department and I you know I I
06:57 take a look in the waiting room and the
06:58 waiting room is absolutely absolutely
06:59 teaming with patients there's just so
07:01 many people and I'm like whoo this is
07:02 where the real medicine is at I'm I'm
07:04 going to save the lives I go to my
07:05 computer and I go through the list and
07:07 then I see the next patient in order of
07:09 priority and by the end of the day I've
07:10 seen about eight patients cuz it takes
07:11 me about an hour it's like an 8 hour
07:12 shift and I don't even take my lunch
07:14 break because you know I've got the
07:16 energy I've got the vibe I've got the
07:16 passion I'm going to save the lives and
07:19 on my way home I look in the waiting
07:20 room and it's still absolutely teeming
07:23 with patience it's still completely full
07:24 what the hell and then on Tuesday I'm
07:26 like all right cool it's Day 2 that was
07:27 my first day I was a little bit
07:28 inefficient I only saw one patient an
07:30 hour let me be more efficient with this
07:32 let me take two patients at a time let
07:33 me batch my calls to Radiology let me
07:34 batch the Bloods that I'm doing let me
07:36 sort of parallel process so there's no
07:37 like downtime and I was applying all of
07:39 my kind of productivity principles to
07:41 the seeing of patience and you know
07:43 again I skipped my lunch break and I saw
07:46 12 patients that day I managed to do 1
07:47 and a half patients an hour or 1.2
07:49 patients an hour whatever the number is
07:51 and then on my way home I looked in the
07:52 waiting room and it was still absolutely
07:55 teeming with patience it was like
07:56 nothing I didn't made any difference and
07:58 then okay the next day I was like what
08:00 the hell's going on here and I mentioned
08:02 this to one of the consultants and the
08:03 consultant said to me it's your first
08:05 day isn't it I was like yeah how do you
08:06 know and he was like yeah cuz everyone
08:08 realizes this a few days to a few weeks
08:09 in and what he said really has really
08:11 stuck with me since he said the waiting
08:13 room will never be empty there will
08:15 always be more patience to see all we
08:17 can do is show up each day as our best
08:19 selves and see patience in order of
08:21 priority he also forced me to take my
08:23 lunch break because it's like legally
08:24 mandated that every 4 hours you have to
08:25 take a lunch break uh because otherwise
08:27 your focus and concentration Falls and
08:28 so I actually started taking my lunch
08:30 breaks but that has really stuck with me
08:32 because whatever you're doing with your
08:33 job whatever you're doing outside your
08:34 job whatever you're doing with your
08:35 family there is always more you could be
08:37 doing you know I've heard from parents
08:38 it's like you know you think you're
08:39 doing well at work and then you get home
08:41 and it's like you know the school is
08:43 saying you got to bake a cake for the
08:44 freaking bake sale you've got to do your
08:45 parent teacher meeting you've got to do
08:47 this and that you've got to sign up to
08:48 be a governor of the board and if you're
08:50 an entrepreneur you know I've got a
08:51 business you might have a side hustle
08:53 you know there is always an infinite
08:54 amount of work to be done the waiting
08:56 room will never be empty but as long as
08:58 we can show up each day as our best
08:59 selves and crucially focus on things in
09:02 order of priority then in a way it
09:04 doesn't matter if the waiting room is
09:05 always full because as long as you are
09:07 seeing the highest priority Patients
09:08 First this is how a surgeon on the
09:10 battlefield triage patients if someone's
09:12 about to die you see them first if
09:13 someone's you know got a bit of a cough
09:15 you see them second and then you
09:17 reprioritize I think of my entire to-do
09:19 list and time management and like
09:20 everything I'm trying to do with that
09:22 metaphor the waiting room will never be
09:23 empty therefore what I choose to do is
09:25 just show up as my best self every day
09:27 and focus on things in order of priority
09:29 and if we can just do that every day
09:31 forever then we're not going to be
09:33 filled with regret that like we made the
09:34 wrong decisions early on in other all
09:36 right mindset number three is that life
09:38 maintenance is not the goal there are
09:40 broadly two buckets of things that we
09:42 can do with our time there are there are
09:45 things that we have to do to maintain
09:46 the status quo to maintain our lives and
09:49 then there are things that we can do to
09:51 progress our lives and progress can me
09:53 anything it could be in work could be
09:54 side hustle could be like taking up a
09:55 new hobby learning a skill you know that
09:57 kind of stuff actively improving a
09:58 relationship actively improving our
09:59 health rather than just maintaining and
10:02 when you have a 9 to5 when you're
10:03 working full-time it can be very easy
10:05 for all of the stuff that you do outside
10:07 of your 9 to5 to be in the Life
10:08 maintenance Camp so for example sleeping
10:10 8 hours a night you know that's the life
10:13 maintenance Camp unfortunately we kind
10:14 of have to do it but it's not really
10:16 progressing Us in any meaningful way it
10:18 is maintaining the status quo similarly
10:21 cooking and eating food is in the
10:24 category of Life maintenance it's just
10:26 you know you have to eat unless you're
10:28 like actively trying to improve your
10:29 cooking skills and experimenting with
10:30 new recipes and stuff you know then that
10:32 would fall in the progression camp but
10:33 just cooking and eating and cleaning up
10:35 is in the maintenance Camp cleaning the
10:36 house unfortunately he's in the
10:37 maintenance Camp there are all sorts of
10:39 these activities that we need to do in
10:40 the Life maintenance camp and what it
10:41 can be really easy to do especially if
10:43 you're overwhelmed with stuff at work
10:44 and stuff at home is for everything we
10:46 do to either be going to work or to be
10:49 maintaining our life and maintaining the
10:52 ability to then go to work the next day
10:54 now obviously in certain seasons of our
10:56 life we're going to be you know more
10:58 imbalanced where we're just going to
10:59 where it's going to be a bit of a
11:00 struggle just to get by a lot of people
11:01 were like this in the pandemic I hear
11:03 that when you have kids it becomes like
11:04 that for a few years but generally the
11:05 way I like to think about this is that I
11:08 want to make sure that every day I'm
11:09 spending at least one or two hours doing
11:12 stuff that is progressing my life
11:13 outside of work not just maintaining it
11:16 so this might involve for example
11:17 blocking out time specifically to work
11:19 on specific projects this might involve
11:21 setting goals for the year or setting
11:22 goals for the quarter and then actively
11:24 making time to work towards those goals
11:26 this might involve thinking of my gym
11:28 stuff rather rather than I'm I just want
11:30 to exercise because exercise is required
11:32 for Life maintenance instead of thinking
11:34 about it as I want to train I want to
11:35 train for a specific thing I want to get
11:37 my bench press to 100 kg or my deadlift
11:39 or like 180 or like I want to train for
11:41 that Marathon this sense of progress is
11:44 a big part of what makes life feel
11:46 fulfilling and meaningful and a big part
11:48 of when people feel like they're in a
11:49 rut is because they go to work they come
11:51 home they maintain and then they go to
11:53 work the next day so what I would
11:55 encourage you to do if you haven't yet
11:57 is you know tangibly practically
11:58 speaking
11:59 set some goals for the year now lots of
12:02 you attended my annual planning workshop
12:03 that I hosted a couple weeks ago um
12:05 planning to do more of these but if you
12:07 have not yet set goals for the year
12:08 honestly what I would recommend is you
12:09 pause the video right now and have a
12:11 think 12 months from now what would you
12:14 like to be celebrating what would you
12:16 like to be celebrating you know when I
12:17 do talks and stuff I ask people to close
12:19 their eyes I play some soulful music in
12:20 the background Tony Robin style it's
12:22 great I love the but what would you
12:24 like to be celebrating 12 months from
12:25 now in work in health and in
12:28 relationships those are like the three
12:29 broad buckets of life you could add more
12:31 to the list if you want we tend to want
12:33 to celebrate the wins we want to
12:34 celebrate some kind of progress so what
12:36 kind of progress could you make in work
12:37 health and relationships that you can
12:38 imagine yourself celebrating with a
12:40 friend 12 months from now and then once
12:42 you've thought about that it is worth
12:44 writing it down somewhere you can see it
12:45 regularly so for me I have a Google doc
12:48 which is the first thing on my Chrome I
12:49 call it my goalkeeper doc because it's
12:50 where I keep my goals and where I do my
12:52 weekly reviews more on that in part
12:53 three but that is something that I look
12:55 at at least once a week and it reminds
12:56 me what my goals are and it helps me get
12:59 into this mode of thinking oh yeah I do
13:01 have a sense of progress I do have a
13:02 sense of momentum and there's a really
13:03 nice uh phrase which is that it's not
13:05 about the pursuit of happiness it's
13:07 about the happiness of pursuit a lot of
13:09 using our time well and managing our
13:11 time is having something to actually
13:13 work towards outside of our 9 to5 that
13:15 helps us feel the sense of purpose it
13:17 gives us a reason to be better at time
13:19 management it gives us a reason to not
13:21 procrastinate so much it gives us a
13:22 reason to you know prioritize and set
13:24 goals and work towards them while
13:26 enjoying the journey along the way
13:27 because that sense of I'm there is some
13:30 I'm I'm on a journey I'm climbing the
13:32 summit there is something I'm working
13:33 towards it's profoundly energizing and
13:36 it's profoundly fulfilling even outside
13:38 of work all right mindset number four is
13:40 the mindset of intentionality in the
13:42 world of meditation I think in like
13:45 monasteries and and stuff they have a
13:46 bell a ding that goes off you know every
13:49 every now and then and the point of the
13:51 ding is to remind the monks or the
13:54 people in the monastery or whatever to
13:56 focus on the present moment you know one
13:58 way to think about time management is
14:00 you know especially if you're if you're
14:02 in the confines of of a full-time job
14:04 then one way to think about it is to
14:06 what extent am I being intentional with
14:07 the way I'm using my time because when
14:09 you get good at time management you'll
14:10 end up with basically 100%
14:12 intentionality so for example if if you
14:14 imagine this Bell were to go off every
14:16 15 minutes and when a bell goes off the
14:18 ding happens and you ask yourself to
14:20 what extent were the last 15 minutes
14:22 intentional or not that gives you a
14:25 sense of am I using my time
14:26 intentionally or am I not using my time
14:28 intentionally now let's say you intended
14:29 to for example cook and eat food ding
14:31 the Bell goes off great fantastic you've
14:32 cooked and eat and and eaten food but
14:34 let's say the Bell goes off and in the
14:36 last 15 minutes you've been scrolling
14:37 Tik Tok or Instagram or watching Netflix
14:39 and you didn't actively make that
14:40 intention to do those things now you
14:42 have not been intentional with your use
14:43 of time that's not to say it's a bad
14:45 thing that's not to say you should beat
14:46 yourself up but the point of time
14:47 management and getting good at this
14:48 stuff is that we want to get it to a
14:50 point that every every 15-minute block
14:52 of time that we have in our calendars
14:53 and and in our lives is at least
14:55 intentional now again this is not this
14:57 does not have to be doing work this does
14:59 not have to be doing things that are
15:01 productive it just needs to be things
15:02 that are intentional did you intend to
15:04 scroll Tik Tok for 15 minutes if so
15:06 great if not then that's something we
15:08 can work on did you intend to watch that
15:10 Netflix show and another episode and
15:12 another episode and another episode if
15:14 so fantastic you're literally living the
15:15 dream but if not now we've been a bit
15:17 unintentional with how we've been using
15:19 our time and I like intentionality as
15:20 the bar you know sometimes people say to
15:22 me in podcast and stuff you know you
15:24 know are there any times where you're
15:25 not productive and for me like
15:28 productive is basically the same as
15:29 intentionality it's like if I'm using my
15:31 time well I consider that being
15:33 productive so if I intended to watch
15:34 four episodes of House of the Dragon I
15:36 consider that productive but if I have
15:38 found myself watching four episodes of
15:39 House of the Dragon having not intended
15:41 to I would consider that unproductive
15:43 and really the goal of time management
15:45 is you know firstly to have the sense of
15:46 progress of things that we're actually
15:48 act actively doing but then secondly to
15:51 intentionally use the blocks of time
15:52 that we have and the way I think about
15:54 it is that each of these blocks of time
15:55 is 15 minutes I think 15 minutes is good
15:57 is is is a good amount you could think
15:59 of it as hours but an hour an hour is a
16:01 bit too long I think you know thinking
16:03 of it as like there are four of these
16:05 blocks of time every hour and every hour
16:07 I have a choice of what I can do with
16:08 these 15 minutes 15 minutes is a lot of
16:10 time it's a lot of time to make progress
16:12 on making a YouTube video a lot of time
16:14 to make progress in writing a book 15
16:15 minutes to connect with your spouse or
16:17 your loved one with your entire presence
16:19 is actually quite a lot of time like
16:21 from what I've read and what I've
16:22 experienced um most romantic Partners
16:24 care a lot less about the quantity of
16:26 time that you spend together and it's a
16:27 lot more about the quality of time and
16:29 so really 15 minutes is a solid block of
16:31 time 15 minutes is enough time to make
16:33 progress on meaningful projects and also
16:34 to make progress on improving the health
16:36 of a most important relationships and
16:37 mindset number five is treat yourself
16:40 like a robot now what I mean by this is
16:42 that if for example you were programming
16:44 a robot and it didn't do what you
16:45 intended it to do you wouldn't like
16:47 flagellate the robot you wouldn't like
16:49 beat it up you wouldn't like tell it
16:51 tell the robot it's a terrible person
16:52 you would just think okay the code
16:54 didn't work you know I programmed the
16:55 system wrong and when it comes to time
16:58 management Focus distraction
16:59 productivity a lot of procrastination a
17:01 lot of this stuff we tend to have a lot
17:03 of negative energy towards ourselves
17:05 about it like oh man I'm such a freaking
17:07 idiot I didn't go to the gym three times
17:09 this week oh oh why do I always do why
17:11 do I always procrastinate like it would
17:12 be so counterproductive to say that kind
17:13 of stuff to a robot if we thought it was
17:15 a robot because it's just the system
17:16 that hasn't worked and so if we can
17:18 treat ourselves like a robot in like a
17:20 nice way it means that when we struggle
17:22 with something or when we fail to be
17:23 intentional with how we're managing our
17:25 time or procrastinating or getting
17:26 distracted or whatever it means the
17:28 solution to the problem is we just need
17:30 to tweak the system rather than I need
17:33 to beat myself up now I'm saying all of
17:34 this with the risk that you know I
17:36 sometimes get comments being like Oh my
17:37 God Ali abdal is such a productivity
17:39 robot it's like you know what I'll take
17:41 it if being a productivity robot means I
17:43 don't beat myself up for failing to do
17:45 the things that I intended to do then
17:46 that's a trade I'll take I'll take any
17:48 day of the week but I guess practically
17:50 speaking an example is so you know when
17:52 I was working as a doctor when I had a
17:53 real job when I had my 9 to5 confining
17:56 me with an hour commute to work an hour
17:57 commute back back having to like cook
17:59 for myself or whatever I wanted to build
18:01 this YouTube channel I wanted to film
18:03 one or two videos a week and edit them
18:05 and publish them this was back when I
18:06 was doing my own editing and there were
18:08 certain days where I would get home from
18:10 work and I would feel completely drained
18:12 and I would not have the energy to
18:14 actually edit the videos now in that
18:16 context I could have just decided to
18:19 push through it I could have beaten
18:20 myself up I could have told myself I'm a
18:22 I'm an idiot and I just need to be more
18:23 disciplined just need to work harder all
18:25 that I I could have had all of those
18:26 narratives but instead what I did is I
18:28 would treat myself like a system I would
18:30 be like okay the robot did not have
18:32 enough energy in the tank to do video
18:34 editing this evening great that's useful
18:36 to know why did the robot not have the
18:38 energy okay well robot only got 4 hours
18:40 of sleep last night because robot was on
18:42 a night shift the night before I like
18:43 okay cool that's useful to know why else
18:45 well robot didn't really eat anything
18:47 today all day because it was like a
18:48 stupidly busy day on like the obstetric
18:50 and Gynecology Ward with all these
18:51 emergencies I was like okay cool
18:52 emergencies happened and I didn't have
18:53 time to take care of myself nice
18:56 therefore what can that tell me about
18:58 next time so next time around let me
19:00 make sure I don't time block an editing
19:02 session for myself after a night shift
19:04 because it's very hard to have the
19:04 energy after a night shift where I don't
19:06 have much sleep and secondly let me make
19:08 sure you know that there is always 5
19:10 minutes to take a lunch break there's
19:11 always 5 minutes to just grab a little
19:12 sandwich grab something rather than just
19:14 starving myself all day cool now I've
19:16 got like a new set of algorithms which
19:19 is number one no editing after a night
19:21 shift and number two eat every day for
19:23 lunch it's not that hot I've treated
19:25 myself like a system and yet I know so
19:27 many people who are in identical
19:28 situations or analogous situations where
19:30 they won't take that step back to think
19:32 why did this happen they will just say
19:34 oh this thing happened I failed I failed
19:36 to do this thing therefore I'm bad
19:39 therefore I'm lazy therefore I'm a
19:40 procrastinator and it gets into this
19:42 like personal flagellation but if you
19:44 just think think of yourself as a system
19:45 you just identify and diagnose what what
19:48 were the problems with that system today
19:50 cool what does that mean about what you
19:51 should do moving forward great hunky
19:53 dory life is all good Okay so we've
19:54 talked about these five mindset shifts
19:56 but if there's just one thing that you
19:57 take away from this video I would love
19:58 for that to be actually having some
20:01 goals outside of your work some personal
20:03 goals to work towards because there's no
20:05 point in time management if it's just
20:06 going to result in us watching I don't
20:07 know watching more Netflix or just
20:08 maintaining our life a little bit better
20:10 I think it's really important to have
20:11 those things that we're working towards
20:13 have a think about this 12 month
20:14 celebration and then in videos two and
20:16 three of this series we're going to be
20:17 talking much more about practical things
20:19 that you can do but it's it's almost
20:21 like you know that Simon synic book
20:22 start with why if you don't have a why
20:25 behind why you want to be more
20:26 productive or why you want to manage
20:26 your time better then it's just not
20:28 going to happen right we need to have a
20:29 clear why we need to have a set of goals
20:31 that we're working towards just outside
20:32 of our work so that we're not just
20:34 spending our life maintaining the
20:36 ability to do our 9 to5 but instead
20:38 we're actually making meaningful
20:40 progress in the pursuit of something
20:41 that is Meaningful to us it does not
20:43 have to be a business it does not have
20:44 to be a YouTube channel but it can be if
20:45 you want that's what I did that's why
20:47 I'm here um it can be whatever you want
20:49 but it should be something outside of
20:51 just life maintenance that's that's what
20:52 I would say so this was episode one of
20:54 our three-part series around managing
20:55 your time outside of a 9 to5 check out
20:57 this video here for episode number two
20:58 which is all about the Practical things
21:00 we can do to minimize the amount of time
21:01 we're wasting or draining away from the
21:03 things that that drain our time so I
21:05 hope you enjoy this video and I'll
21:06 hopefully see you in the next one
