00:00In this video we will learn how to comp recordings in Live
using Take Lanes.
00:05I've got my guitar hooked up to my audio interface
and I'd like to add a riff to this sketch.
00:11Making sure looping is engaged
and set to the length that I want,
00:15and just gonna hit record and start jamming.
00:46That recording had a few mistakes but also a few good
moments.
00:50Let's solo this track and comp together the best parts.
00:55I can access the Take Lanes from my recording
by choosing "Show Take Lanes" from the context menu.
01:01Or by pressing Cmd + Option + U on a Mac
or Ctrl + Alt + U on a PC.
01:07Now we can see my takes displayed chronologically,
with the most recent take at the bottom.
01:12Notice how the highlighted takes at the bottom
are reflected in the main lane at the top.
01:17The highlighted clips are the ones we will hear
when we play back our comped recording.
01:26I can audition Take Lanes by clicking on the speaker button
or by pressing T on my computer keyboard.
01:33To choose what parts of each take end up in my main lane
I can simply select the parts I like, and press Enter.
01:41Notice how my selections become highlighted and how
the clips in the main lane update immediately.
01:50Alternatively, I can use the Pencil tool to select the parts
I'd like to use.
02:24I can also select a section of my recording
and compare the different takes from that selection.
02:30Selecting an area with my pointer and then switching
to the Pencil tool by pressing B
02:35I can simply click on the clips I would like to hear.
02:41I can keep my workflow organized by deleting Take Lanes,
renaming them, or changing their order.
02:50Now that I'm happy with my selection I can hide my take
lanes again.
02:58Notice how the sequence of clips behave exactly like any
other clips on my timeline.
03:02I can fine-tune the boundaries between clips,
I can change the settings in the Clip View,
03:08and I can apply fades to the clips' edges
to get my guitar recording sounding exactly the way I want.
03:28If I later change my mind about a certain part
of the comped recording,
03:32I can swap between takes without showing the Take Lanes.
03:36Simply select the part you would like to swap, hold down
Cmd on a Mac or Ctrl on a PC,
03:42and use your keyboard's Up and Down arrow keys
to scroll between the takes.
03:54You can also comp MIDI recordings. Let's add some
Hammond organ licks to this arrangement.
04:27Just like with audio recordings, I can comp together
my favourite parts of this improvisation.
05:04Take Lanes can also be used as a means of organizing
complex sequences of audio.
05:10You don't have to record material to use Take Lanes.
05:13Just select a track and either choose 'Insert Take Lane'
from the Context Menu or press Cmd Shift T on a Mac,
05:20or Ctrl Shift T on a PC. Let's add 3 Take Lanes to my new
audio track and comp together a lead line.
05:28Here I have prepared 3 versions of the same synth pattern
using different sounds. Let's have a quick listen.
05:46Let's drag and drop these audio clips onto my new Take
Lanes and start comping them together.
06:33As you can hear, the results can be fun and inspiring.
Once I've created a sequence I like, I will once again
06:39hide my Take Lanes and continue making music.
